‘Dead Pixels’ is a new comedy that lovingly pokes fun at gaming culture

TwitterFacebook

In Dead Pixels, we follow a group of friends who pass the majority of their time together on the green pastures of the online game Kingdom Scroll — a fictional RPG that just happens to look a whole lot like World of Warcraft.

Since the four gamer friends don’t seem to have that much to do with each other beyond Kingdom Scroll, it’s easy to see the show as a commentary on how young people are spending their lives in fantasy universes while losing touch with the outside world and the people in it.

But according to Alexa Davies, star of the new Channel 4 comedy, that’s not the case. Dead Pixels, Davies explains, is not a commentary on the stereotypical view of gaming culture as a virtual world populated by those who feel safer online. Read more…

‘Final Destination’ star Devon Sawa boards flight on the film’s anniversary. Seriously.

19 years ago, Devon Sawa avoided an ill-fated flight in the now-cult film Final Destination.
Almost two decades to the date, the actor tweeted on Sunday that he’d just boarded a plane with the flight number 317. On March 17. 3/17. Oh no.

James Gunn is back as ‘Guardians of the Galaxy 3’ director

TwitterFacebook

In a huge reversal, Disney is welcoming James Gunn back to the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. He has been rehired to direct the third movie after he was fired in July last year.

The move was apparently decided on months ago. Disney Studios president Alan Horn was persuaded by Gunn’s public apology and his handling of the situation and decided to reverse course to reinstate him, according to Deadline. Mashable has confirmed the report.

Gunn also confirmed the news on Twitter with an emotional statement.

Why I love, love, love ‘Captain Marvel’ and everything it stands for

TwitterFacebook

Warning: Mild spoilers for Captain Marvel lie ahead.

Slap a 100% Certified Fresh sticker on my forehead and call me a hype man because I loved Captain Marvel. No ifs, ands, or buts. I just really, really, really loved this movie.

The undeniably fantastic Black Panther notwithstanding, I generally don’t obsess over the MCU. Sure, I’ve seen nearly every movie in its canon and can give you a simplified rundown on its most central plot lines — I mean, I work at Mashable: Home of the Marvel Obsession, and am also alive in 2019 — but broadly speaking, superhero movies rarely stick with me for more than a few hours. Netflix cancels ‘One Day at a Time’ amidst vocal #RenewODAAT campaign

TwitterFacebook

Netflix has made the no good, very bad decision to cancel One Day at a Time.

In a relatively long Twitter thread, the streaming giant announced the “tough choice” to stop making more of this inclusive, empathetic, hilarious comedy centering on the Alvarezes, a Cuban-American immigrant family led by Rita Moreno and Justina Machado.

We’ve made the very difficult decision not to renew One Day At A Time for a fourth season. The choice did not come easily — we spent several weeks trying to find a way to make another season work but in the end simply not enough people watched to justify another season.

Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. just had a Marvel-lous Twitter exchange

TwitterFacebook

Twitter undeniably has a whole bunch of uses.

But helping us fill the gaping void between Avengers movies by providing a space for our favourite superheroes to cheerfully tweet at each other is surely one of its finest achievement.

On Wednesday evening, Robert Downey Jr. — aka Iron Man — posted the following, beautifully captioned image of two well-known toy figurines sheltering beneath a rain of fire.

‘Derry Girls’ is an ode to ’90s music and my nostalgic soul loves every minute

TwitterFacebook

I don’t have enough fingers to count the things I love about Derry Girls.

There’s the fact that it captures the niche sense of humour of the Northern Irish people. And the fact that it’s subverting stereotypes about Northern Irish women. And the fact that it shines a light on what life during the Troubles was really like. But, one thing that is particularly wonderful about this absolute gem of a show is the music.

If you grew up during the ’90s — or if you just so happened to be alive and in possession of a radio during this decade — then watching the show feels like taking an utterly delightful meander down memory lane. At times, the track list sounds like a paean to the school discos of your childhood, featuring songs like Gina G’s “Ooh Aah… Just a Little Bit”, Whigfield’s “Saturday Night,” CeCe Peniston’s “Finally,” Ace of Base’s “All That She Wants,” Shampoo’s “Trouble,” and En Vogue’s “My Lovin’ (You’re Never Gonna Get It).” Season One happens to feature my favourite song from 1993: 2 Unlimited’s “No Limit.” (Apparently five-year-old me was heavily into Dutch Eurodance.)  Read more…

‘American Gods’ Season 2 can’t keep the faith

TwitterFacebook

After a year off the air and a significant amount of behind-the-scenes struggle, American Gods has returned with its second season. That in itself is good news.

In today’s cancelation-happy television environment, it’s rare that a show as beautifully odd and daring as American Gods’ first season would survive losing two showrunners, two leading actors, and constant, well-publicized rewrites. So really, good on American Gods for making it to Season 2.

Unfortunately, if the three episodes provided for review are anything to go on, the bulk of the show’s charm and magic was lost at some point in 2018. What remains is a tawdry and tedious shadow (pun not intended) of American Gods Season 1.  Read more…
