The Google Arts and Culture app has a race problem

TwitterFacebook

The Google Arts and Culture app (available on iOS and Android) has been around for two years, but this weekend, it shot to the top of both major app stores because of a small, quietly added update.

The newest feature lets you take a selfie, then searches a database of well-known artworks from around the world to match your photo with a face from a museum piece.

The software uses advanced artificial intelligence and facial recognition to analyze patterns in your face, then find similar traits across real photos and paintings. It’s a fun experiment — especially if you get a good match. Read more…

‘The least racist person you have ever interviewed’: President Trump responds to ‘sh*thole’ comment

TwitterFacebook

President Trump is “not a racist.” At least that’s what he says.

Following a veritable shitstorm of backlash after he referred to places including Haiti, El Salvador, and some African countries as “shithole countries,” Trump has declared that not only did he not say the derogatory comment, but that he isn’t racist. Wait, the “least racist person.”

“I’m not a racist. I am the least racist person you have ever interviewed, that I can tell you,” Trump said on Sunday night. The president was interviewed by reporters before having dinner with House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy at Trump International Golf Club in Florida. Read more…

CNN’s Don Lemon and Anderson Cooper don’t mince words: Trump’s comments were ‘racist’

TwitterFacebook

Nobody should be surprised Donald Trump said something racist. Before election day, he said many undocumented Mexican immigrants were “rapists” and criminals, and his company was sued by the Justice Department for discriminating against black tenants — way back in 1973

And yet, he continues to outdo himself. “Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?” he reportedly said on Thursday, referring to people from Haiti, El Salvador and African countries. He then suggested bringing in more immigrants from Norway — you know, white people.

Oprah’s must-see speech at the Globes will make you cry — and inspire you to take action

TwitterFacebook

There’s a reason why, throughout the Golden Globes, stars have been whispering her name like a  prayer: Oprah.

The queen’s acceptance speech for the esteemed Cecil B. DeMille award (essentially a lifetime achievement award) at the Golden Globes Sunday night was a rallying cry for the disenfranchised that managed to perfectly articulate the #MeToo moment.

“It is not lost on me that at this moment there’s some little girls watching as I become the first black woman to be given the same award,” she said, speaking about watching Sidney Poitier as a child. “It is an honor and it is a privilege to share the evening with all of them.” Read more…

Victoria’s Secret models slammed for allegedly singing the n-word backstage

TwitterFacebook

Another Victoria’s Secret show, another controversy.

Some Victoria’s Secret models have been slammed for allegedly uttering the n-word while singing along to Cardi B’s “Bodak Yellow.”

In a video posted by a Twitter account called Pop Crave on Tuesday, the clip shows models singing backstage at the fashion show, which took place in Shanghai this year.

Most of the models in the video appear to be white, and sing along to the lyric in Cardi B’s song, which goes: “I don’t wanna choose / And I’m quick, cut a ni**a hustle / Don’t get comfortable.” Read more…

Funny or Die and their famous friends want to ‘Reclaim Black Friday’ for something that matters

TwitterFacebook

Black Friday is traditionally all about shopping, but what if it was about something that could actually make a difference in the world? (Not that buying a new TV or iPhone isn’t pretty life changing, obviously.)

Funny or Die and The Collective PAC have launched a new fundraising campaign to “Reclaim Black Friday,” hoping to use the day to support black politicians.

Stars including Yvette Nicole Brown, Meagan Good, Dulé Hill and Metta World Peace are on hand for the PSA, with Good pointing out that, despite the day being synonymous with retail, “the main two words contain our pigmentation and the classic Ice Cube buddy film” — so it’s about time the holiday was reclaimed from the shopaholics.  Read more…

Tesla says a new lawsuit alleging racial harassment at its California factory is a “hotbed of misinformation”

Tesla has hit back at a class-action lawsuit that alleges its Fremont, California manufacturing plant is a “hotbed for racist behavior.” Filed earlier this week by Marcus Vaughn, who worked at the plant from April to October, the suit claims that Tesla failed to investigated a human resources complaint by Vaughn after repeatedly being called the “n-word” by managers… Read More
