Facebook’s policy on white supremacy plays right into a racist agenda

In an ongoing series over at Motherboard, we’re learning quite a bit about how Facebook polices hate speech and hate organizations on its platform. Historically, the company has been far less than transparent about its often inconsistent censorship practices, even as white supremacist content — and plenty of other forms of hate targeted at marginalized […]

Dictonary.com just came for Roseanne Barr and her racist comments

TwitterFacebook

Roseanne Barr is the subject of countless headlines and tweets on Tuesday after posting racist remarks on Twitter before announcing she would be leaving the platform altogether.

Barr’s since-deleted tweet was pointed towards Barack Obama’s former advisor Valerie Jarrett, saying if the “Muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby=vj.”

As noted by many Twitter users, some outlets covered the incident without explicitly calling the behavior “racist.” Instead, they chose to initially use words or phrases like “bizarre,” “offensive,” or “racially charged.” Believe it or not, Dictionary.com is on the front lines, calling them out.  Read more…

New Starbucks policy: You don’t need to buy their coffee to sit or use the bathroom

TwitterFacebook

Starbucks issued a new policy on Saturday: Patrons no longer need to make a purchase to sit in the cafe or use the restrooms.

According to the Associated Press, Starbucks executives have claimed the old policies were “loose and ambiguous,” which left the decision on whether or not people could use the bathroom or sit in the stores up to managers and employees.

Now, the company is telling its employees to consider every person entering the store a customer “regardless of whether they make a purchase.”

The new policy comes just weeks after two black men, Rashon Nelson and Donte Robinson, were arrested and escorted out of a Philadelphia Starbucks on April 12. The men hadn’t ordered anything yet, because they were waiting for a friend to arrive.  Read more…

New kids’ book teaches parents how to talk about racism, police shootings

TwitterFacebook

Few subjects give parents pause like talking about racism.

For black families, the topic can be painful and often involves the upsetting task of explaining to children how they may be viewed differently by just about anyone — but specifically law enforcement.

White parents, on the other hand, may avoid the subject altogether, fearful that they’ll say the wrong thing or worried that acknowledging racism could somehow encourage their children to become prejudiced.

A new kids’ book authored by three child psychologists aims to give all parents, regardless of their racial or ethnic identity, tools for having these tough conversationsSomething Happened in Our Town: A Child’s Story about Racial Injustice takes place in the wake of a police shooting that leaves a black man dead, and the reader watches how conversations about the tragedy unfold in different households.  Read more…

Starbucks faces social media backlash over tepid apology for alleged racial profiling

TwitterFacebook

Cell phone video captured a bewildered man at Starbucks this week asking Philadelphia police why they were arresting his two black friends.

Onlookers said there didn’t appear to be a reason for the arrest. The men were simply sitting at the coffee shop, waiting for their business associate — the aforementioned bewildered man — to show up before placing their orders.

Now, Starbucks has confirmed that the incident was a mistake, and “are disappointed this led to an arrest.”

The three-sentence apology, however, is short on details or a even just a blunt admission of guilt. The company did not reply to Mashable’s request for more details at the time of this publication.  Read more…
