Four years. That’s how long it took for Apple to finally update the Mac mini.

Why did it take so long? Call it serious neglect, overshadowed by the tremendous growth of the iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch. It really doesn’t matter anymore because Apple finally updated its most affordable Mac.

I requested a review unit to evaluate just how much value somebody could squeeze from the $799 Mac mini, but Apple left me hanging. So I bought my own to find out. Read more…

Dyson’s heater/air purifier combo is a great winter companion

TwitterFacebook
Dyson Pure Hot+Cool Link
$599.99
The Good

Sleek looking • Heats a room quickly • App is easy to use and packed with visual data

The Bad

No heat controls in app • Pricey

The Bottom Line

You’ll spend a lot on Dyson’s air purifier/space heater combo, but there’s no question it’s excellent at its two jobs: cleaning up and warming the air in your home.

When Dyson upgraded its smart air purifier, the Pure Cool, earlier this year, it went out of its way to make it was less irritating to use in winter months. Since the Pure Cool doubles as a cooling fan, Dyson gave it a backwards-airflow mode that pushes the air out the sides, greatly reducing its “chilling” effect. Read more…

We used Boring’s Not-A-Flamethrower to burn away the worst of 2018

TwitterFacebook

As 2018 comes to a close, it’s hard not to look back at the year with some bitterness.

Okay, okay, 2018 wasn’t complete trash for everyone. But for all the highs, there were an equal amount (if not more) lows that made the year kind of suck.

We’re not here to be a Debbie Downer and dredge up all the bad moments 2018 threw at us, so instead we’re using this very last day of the year to cleanse the past and ring in 2019 in Mashable style: by burning it all away 🔥.

Armed with our new little friend, the Boring Not-A-Flamethrower, we torched some of the year’s worst times — trends and products that rightfully deserved to be incinerated. Read more…

TwitterFacebook
Google Maps on Apple CarPlay
$0 (free on CarPlay-enabled cars)

Really easy to connect • Similar to Google Maps on iOS • CarPlay integrates well with texts • calls • and music streaming

The Bad

Google Maps not native experience • Difficult to input destination info mid-ride • Not as full-featured as iOS version of Google Maps

The Bottom Line

If you’re an iPhone owner but prefer Google Maps to Apple Maps, the CarPlay version is a smooth, albeit limited way to get the in-car experience you want.

RED’s Hydrogen One was the worst tech product of 2018

TwitterFacebook
RED Hydrogen One
$$1,294.99
The Good

It works • Battery life lasts long • Loud front-facing stereo speakers

The Bad

‘Holographic display’ is garbage • Bulky • shoddily-built construction • So gargantuan it hurts to hold • Laughably outdated Android interface • Where the hell are the modules?

The Bottom Line

RED deserves credit for running in the opposite direction of mobile trends with the Hydrogen One. It’s too bad they made all of the wrong choices.

Roku Premiere and Premiere+ review: You should consider only one

TwitterFacebook
Roku Premiere and Premiere+
$39.99 or $49.99
The Good

Plenty of apps (aka channels) to choose from • Slim design • Prime Video and YouTube apps included

The Bad

Base IR remote on the Premiere • Limited voice controls • No Dolby Vision support

The Bottom Line

The Roku Premiere+ is a solid media-streaming box, but it’s outshined by the robust voice-assistant controls built into its competitors.

The Roku Premiere and Premiere+ are nearly identical 4K streaming devices. The one major difference is that the Premiere+ comes with a microphone-equipped wireless remote control (and it’s also only sold at Walmart). At $39.99 and $49.99 respectively, the Premiere and Premiere+ are poised to compete directly with the similarly priced, Mashable Choice-winning Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K. Read more…

The Rodecaster Pro is a perfect centerpiece to a home podcasting studio

My podcasting rig is simple: Two microphones, a Tascam recorder, two XLR cables. I’ve upgraded things a bit in the past year — improved the mics, bought some foam windscreens and bought a pair of tabletop, foldable mic stands. But the principle is the same: take nothing I can’t fit into a laptop sleeve. It’s […]

Palm phone review: A compelling idea made into a flawed product

TwitterFacebook
Palm
$349.99
The Good

Cool form factor that gets noticed • ‘Life’ mode mutes notifications by default • Still a full-featured smartphone

The Bad

Frustratingly slow at times • No volume buttons • Lousy battery life • Camera is only passable

The Bottom Line

The Palm phone is a compelling approach to the problem of being overconnected, but in practice the number of situations where it’s the device you’d prefer is much smaller than you think.

‘Life-Size 2’ is a made-for-TV Christmas movie with a (gasp!) bisexual character

TwitterFacebook

For years, queer representation has been sorely lacking in the most venerate genres: made-for-TV Christmas movies.

I personally can’t say I ever cared, but for those who do: Congratulations! 2018 has brought you a Christmas miracle in the form of Life-Size 2, a new straight-to-Hulu Christmas movie featuring a bisexual character and Tyra Banks.

It’s a gay double whammy. Minor cultural achievement unlocked!

Made-for-TV Christmas movies are a fairly conservative genre, so seeing any queer representation — and representation of queer women of color — is mind-blowing. I’m sure some closeted kid out there who loves subscription-based streaming services and made-for-TV Christmas movies will be thrilled to see themselves represented in this unapologetically corny 81 minute film. Apple Music on Amazon Echo review: Not as good as HomePod, but good enough

TwitterFacebook

The Good

Apple Music on Echo speakers! • Songs can be set as alarms

The Bad

Only works on Amazon’s own Echo speakers (for now) • Alexa can’t favorite songs • Requires paid Apple Music subscription

The Bottom Line

Turns out Apple Music controlled with Alexa on Amazon Echo speakers works pretty well, and it makes Apple’s HomePod look overpriced.
