You’ll never guess the most-rented movie of 2017

TwitterFacebook

At the U.S. box office, Star Wars: The Last Jedi was far and away the biggest film of 2017, followed by Beauty and the Beast and Wonder Woman.

At home, though, it was a whole different story.

According to the MPAA (via THR and /Film), the top digital rental of 2017 was The Accountant – you know, the 2016 thriller starring Ben Affleck as an autistic accountant who works for the mob.

The film made just $86 million domestically during its theatrical run. That’s not awful, considering The Accountant has a reported production budget of $44 million, but it’s nothing to write home about, either. It didn’t even crack the top 30 releases of that year.  Read more…

The comfort of watching ‘A Series of Unfortunate Events’ while grieving

TwitterFacebook

Netflix’s A Series of Unfortunate Events might mask itself as kooky Tim Burton for kids — but it’s actually an incredibly honest and nuanced depiction of grief.

And for those who’ve ever lost a loved one, Lemony Snicket’s tale can feel like someone reaching out from the screen or page to assure you that you’re not alone in it.

The entire series of unfortunate events is centered around not one, but two devastating experiences of death. One is a recurring motif that begins every other episode with a brief from an unknown griever, addressing his lost love. The first reads: To Beatrice — darling, dearest, dead — and they only get more gut-wrenchingly frank from there. The other, of course, is the Baudelaire children losing their parents in a tragic fire.  Read more…

After temporarily suspending MoviePass at 10 major theaters around the country, AMC is will once again accept the subscription service at all locations, Entertainment Weekly reports.

“We think it’s a great move for both parties as well as the MoviePass consumers,” MoviePass C.E.O. Mitch Lowe told Mashable via email.

After MoviePass dropped its monthly fee from $50 to $9.95 for unlimited movies in theaters, AMC was quick to distance itself from the company (now owned in majority by Helios and Matheson Analytics), saying that the MoviePass business model was “not one AMC can embrace.”  Read more…

Gendry confirms he’ll be at ‘Game of Thrones’ climax and that’s huge

TwitterFacebook

All that rowing seems to have paid off for Gendry — and we don’t just mean because of his beefy upper body muscles.

The actor behind the blacksmith-turned-magic-king-blooded-bastard Joe Dempsie confirmed in an interview with Digital Spy that he’ll have a bigger role to play in the final season of Game of Thrones. Most tantalizingly, he said Gendry will be there at the final climax (though that doesn’t mean he’ll survive it).

That could mean a lot of different and hugely important things for the final plot of Game of Thrones, Season 8, according to many theorists. Read more…
