Luke Skywalker’s darker journey in ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ was just good storytelling

TwitterFacebook

It’s been said before, it’ll be said again: Let the past die. Kill it if you have to. That’s what Rian Johnson did.

Luke Skywalker’s gruff, disillusioned old man in Star Wars: The Last Jedi left a lot of fans angry. But writer/director Johnson had a good reason for going that route, as he articulated very well during a South by Southwest panel this week.

“If you look at any classic hero’s myth that is actually worth its salt, at the beginning of the hero’s journey, like with King Arthur, he pulls the sword from the stone and he’s ascendant — he has setbacks but he unites all the kingdoms,” Johnson told the SXSW crowd (h/t The Hollywood Reporter).  Read more…

Relive THAT Snoke scene from ‘Star Wars’ with Andy Serkis in a mocap suit

TwitterFacebook

Supreme Leader Snoke had quite a moment in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. But how much did the mocap actor behind him — none other than Andy Serkis, aka Gollum (and Klaue from Black Panther, nbd) — really fuel the CG character’s performance?

This clip, newly released to hype the upcoming home video launch of The Last Jedi, offers a glimpse. It’s not the entire scene, of course — no major spoilers here — but it does give you a sense of exactly what the fleshy half of Snoke brought to the role. Read more…

Mark Hamill has the weirdest Star Wars fan theory about where Luke Skywalker went

Mark Hamill has a theory about where Luke Skywalker ended up after The Last Jedi and it’s … well, a little bit more NSFW than the average Star Wars fan theory.
Despite Luke’s physical body disappearing near the end of The Last Jedi, Hamill ap…

Yes, Star Wars just introduced time travel. Don’t freak out.

TwitterFacebook

As we saw with the very vocal minority of Star Wars fans who got upset about The Last Jedi, bringing new features of the Force to the screen can be somewhat controversial.

Now we’re witnessing a new freakout over Force powers. The TV show Star Wars Rebels, set between Episode III and Episode IV, just revealed for the first time in the saga’s official storyline that the Force can let you travel in time.

But there are good reasons why fans should hold their blaster fire on this one.

In The Last Jedi, Luke Skywalker used a hitherto unseen skill, Force projection, to send an image of himself across the galaxy and save the Resistance. “That’s not how the Force works,” cried some fans — until director Rian Johnson dropped the mic by showcasing the book from which this power was drawn.   Read more…

‘The Last Jedi’ director offers perfect response to critics of the movie’s ending

TwitterFacebook

Consider yourself warned if you haven’t seen The Last Jedi yet: there are spoilers within.

Cranky Star Wars fans, Rian Johnson has had enough of your guff.

The director of The Last Jedi took to Twitter on Friday to clap back at fans who are furious at the trick Luke Skywalker pulls on Kylo Ren in the movie’s climactic fight scene on the planet Crait.

During that battle, Kylo confronts what turns out to be a Force projection of Luke. The real deal is actually back on Ahch-To. A younger-looking Luke (with his old-school blue lightsaber — a major clue!) puts Kylo through the emotional ringer before blowing his mind by peacing out into thin air.  Read more…

‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ edited without any men was inevitable, and now it’s here

A couple days ago, a man who was Mad Online about women being in Star Wars: The Last Jedi re-cut the film into a 46-minute mess that featured no women at all.
On Thursday, Dorkly decided to do the opposite, editing out all the men who, to be frank, j…

Joseph Gordon-Levitt wrote an actual 2,000-word essay defending Luke Skywalker

TwitterFacebook

Despite the overwhelmingly positive reviews, The Last Jedi was still a pretty divisive film.

The portrayal of Luke Skywalker’s character, in particular, seems to have drummed fans into a kind of rage-fuelled frenzy of debate. Was it true to Luke’s character to act the way he did? Was his role badly written?

Even Mark Hamill himself waded in.

The point is, people have pretty strong opinions when it comes to Star Wars.

And Joseph Gordon-Levitt is no exception.

I finally saw #TheLastJedi (okay involuntary BB-8 emoji). Then got sucked down a rabbit hole reading people’s starkly differing opinions about it. Couldn’t help it, had to wade in. So I wrote a thing here… https://t.co/ct3YOgJfgL

Mark Hamill sent Kelly Marie Tran the sweetest tweet just ’cause

TwitterFacebook

You ready for a wholesome exchange?

Mark Hamill’s Twitter is always good value for money (we know Twitter is free, you get our meaning though). On Wednesday, seemingly unprompted, Hamill decided to share some Twitter-love with The Last Jedi co-star Kelly Marie Tran.

SHOUT OUT to Kelly Marie Tran for no particular reason other than your more than brilliant performance in #TheLastJedi, being almost criminally adorable & goofy enough to geek out with @chelseahamill almost as if you were a 2nd daughter!

Dark and Light Side versions of ‘The Last Jedi’ are a thing — but not in the U.S.

TwitterFacebook

You may be a Last Jedi superfan. You may have seen Rian Johnson’s galaxy-sized hit five, 10, 15 times. But will you ever truly see it unless you’ve chosen to be on the Light Side or the Dark Side — with special effects to match?

Light Side and Dark Side versions of Last Jedi are a thing in Japan. In the rest of the world, FOMO is a thing.

The special screenings, first reported by THR, come courtesy of 4DX, which describes itself as “the world’s first 4D cinema company.” Launched in South Korea, 4DX seems the epitome of gimmicky — it tilts and rumbles the seats, it sprays smells and fog, it adds wind and strobe and lightning effects. It can even blow bubble into the theater. Read more…

Sad sexist cuts together edit of ‘Last Jedi’ minus the women, Rian Johnson and Mark Hamill aren’t having it

TwitterFacebook

Here’s a thought exercise for you: What would Star Wars: The Last Jedi be without its female characters?

The answer is a slim and sloppy 46 minutes – and a reason for Mark Hamill and Rian Johnson to laugh their asses off.

Over the weekend, a Pirate Bay user uploaded a “de-feminized fan edit” of the film that cuts out most of the women, including “Haldo” (sic) in her entirety; alters Luke Skywalker’s storyline to cut out the “whiny/reluctant/murderous psycho” stuff; and makes Kylo Ren “more badass and much less conflicted and volatile.” Also, Leia dies, Poe dies, and Phasma dies (killed by Finn). The top three films of the 2017 box office all starred women

TwitterFacebook

For the third year in a row, a Star Wars movie emerged as the highest-grossing release of the year in the U.S. – which meant that for the third year in a row, the biggest film in the country was one featuring a female protagonist.

But Rey was just the beginning.

The second-biggest film of the year was Beauty and the Beast. The third? Wonder Woman. According to TheWrap, 2017 marks the first year since 1958 in which the three highest-grossing domestic titles all had female leads. (If you’re wondering, the top three that time were South Pacific, Auntie Mame, and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.) Read more…
