This timelapse of the South Pole’s aurora australis is absolutely magical

Northern lights, step aside. It’s the South Pole’s time to shine.

Very few of us will ever get to witness the spectacular light show that is the aurora australis. With incredibly strong winds and temperatures below -95°F, it’s nearly impossible to film there, too.

Shot by Robert Schwartz, a technician at the Amundsen–Scott South Pole Station, special equipment was created to keep the cameras running all night. The footage captured is a soothing and magical sight to behold.

While you may not be able to localize these lights entirely in your kitchen, you can view this natural wonder online, anytime. Read more…

Hilarious parody shows how SpongeBob got dissed at the Super Bowl halftime show

Well the Super Bowl halftime show certainly….happened.

Girl’s wild frozen hair shows the power of the polar vortex

TwitterFacebook

Alright, Mother Nature, you’ve done your thing — and we’re all very impressed — but this is getting out of hand.

In recent days, extremely cold temperatures have caused everything from 2,600 flight delays to the halting of U.S. postal service delivery (and they never stop for anything). But if there’s anything we can learn from cold Midwesterners, it’s that this polar vortex doesn’t need to be a polar snorefest.

Iowa native @taylor_scallon showed the power of negative temps when she shared a video of herself  outside with a very interesting hairstyle. She managed to get her hair to defy gravity and freeze straight up when she went outside with wet hair.   Read more…

When these snippets are edited together, they form a song — “Arms Unfolding” — which appears on her latest EP. Although the song was uploaded to her channel in August of 2018, the full EP, entitled Human, dropped January 17.

The song does feel very “scrapbook-style,” as Dodie describes it. However, it is truly adorable and definitely made me smile. In the video above, she notes that no one in the comments really picked up on her plans, though some astute viewers noticed that it sometimes sounded like she was singing.  Read more…

‘1000 People of Dance’ video captures humanity at its best

TwitterFacebook

You ever watch something that makes you believe that maybe, just maybe, humanity isn’t a giant dumpster fire of awfulness?

Inspired by those videos where people take pictures of themselves every day for a year, YouTuber Matt Bray created his own joyful series focused on dancing.

The project started with Bray dancing — by himself over 100 days in 2014, then in 100 different places in 2015, then with 100 different people in 2016. For his latest, Bray spent a year and a half traveling around the globe to a total of 15 different countries to create “1000 People of Dance.”
