Twitter’s introduces a battery-saving ‘Lights Out’ dark mode option

As promised back in January by Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, the company today is rolling out an even darker version of the app’s existing dark mode. Before, Twitter’s dark theme was more of a blue-ish shade instead of a true black, which not everyone seemed to like. Now, there’s an optional setting that makes the […]

Bummer: Scientists find Galápagos Islands swarm with marine invaders

TwitterFacebook

After Charles Darwin boarded the H.M.S. Beagle in 1831, the 90-foot ship visited 15 disparate lands — the likes of Brazil, the Canary Islands, and Chile — before eventually anchoring in the Galápagos Islands, four years later.

For 500 years, in fact, ships from thousands of miles away landed in Galápagos, unwittingly carrying along seeds, insects, and critters picked up from around the globe. It’s little surprise, then, that the famous volcanic land teems with foreign animals and plants. But new research, published Thursday in the journal Aquatic Invasions, shows that off the shore, the Galápagos waters are also alive with non-native, invasive species. By scouring just two areas off of two islands (there are 13 major islands), researchers discovered 48 non-native marine species — 10 times more than previously known.  Read more…

How to delay your Form Ds (or not file them at all)

New ‘Game of Thrones’ images are all about Daenerys Targaryen

TwitterFacebook

Daenerys Targaryen is ready for Winterfell, alright.

In a new batch of Game of Thrones Season 8 images released by Sky Atlantic, the UK’s show distributor, the Mother of Dragons is adjusting well at the Stark ancestral home.

With only a little over two weeks to go until the HBO drama returns for its final season, these images are providing all the fodder we need to help with our countdown.

However, the focus is clearly on Dany more than any other character. In one, she’s standing with Jorah Mormont in what appears to be Winterfell’s library — a newly constructed set — with a grim face. In another, she’s visibly blushing. Read more…

Twitter’s new dark mode is actually black and it’s glorious

TwitterFacebook

One of the best design trends of the last year or so is the rise of dark themes for popular apps. If you spend a lot of time staring at screens, dark modes are both easier on the eyes and your battery life.

Now, Twitter is making its dark mode even better, with a new darker theme that’s actually black (as opposed to the previous navy blue-tinged color scheme) and the ability to enable dark mode automatically.

With the changes (which are out on iOS now), Twitter is adding a blacker variation of dark mod  called “Lights Out.” Unlike the app’s previous dark theme, Lights Out is actually black – “a pure black color palette that emits no light since the pixels are turned off,” according to Twitter. Here’s what it looks like compared to the old night mode (which is still available and now labeled as “Dim” in the app.)  Read more…
