Newsweek tweets scarily tone-deaf photo of MLK Jr. in a casket

TwitterFacebook

The next time you’re thinking of tweeting a photo of a Civil Rights legend in a casket, just, uh … don’t.

Earlier today, the Newsweek twitter account shared a photo of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in his casket with the caption, “Have you seen my brother Martin?” The tweet was promptly deleted, but not before it caught the attention and ire of Twitter.

Bernice King, the youngest daughter of MLK Jr., also took notice of the strange tweet.

Why, @Newsweek? Wowhttps://t.co/VOSnmZonGc

Editor’s note: Jonathan Perri is the North American Director of Campaigns & Partnerships at Change.org.

Last month, Change.org reached a milestone of 200 million people having signed or started a petition on our platform in the last 10 years. We’ve always viewed our free petition tools as a resource for the underdogs, the Davids fighting Goliaths to make the world a better place. That’s why we strongly oppose Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai’s plan to end net neutrality

Change.org does not take positions on many issues  —  we believe that’s best left to the people who use our platform, and that it’s our mission to provide the tools that empower them to tell their own stories to make a difference in the world. At the same time, we recognize that as the world’s largest online petition platform, we can’t continue that mission if a few powerful corporations are given the ability to amplify some voices and censor others.  Read more…
