Inside Atari’s rise and fall

By the first few months of 1982, it had become more common to see electronics stores, toy stores, and discount variety stops selling 2600 games. This was before Electronics Boutique, Software Etc., and later, GameStop. Mostly you bought games at stores that sold other electronic products, like Sears or Consumer Distributors. Toys ’R’ Us was a big seller of 2600 games. To buy one, you had to get a piece of paper from the Atari aisle, bring it to the cashier, pay for it, and then wait at a pickup window behind the cash register lanes.

Artist creates a mesmerizing animation using Google Earth satellite images

TwitterFacebook

Snooping around on Google Earth can give you a unique perspective of the world around you, but the images are static so clicking is a slow process.

Páraic McGloughlin, an artist residing in Ireland, created a mesmerizing animation by compiling thousands of satellite images from Google Earth titled Arena.

McGloughlin says the unique view was inspired by the structures we create on Earth.

“The massive contrast between gridded architectural systems and the natural environment is something that when seen from above is very apparent and nearly intrusive looking,” he told Directors Notes. “Cityscapes are at the same time becoming the norm and are in themselves some kind of natural evolution of the planet’s environment. This was a point of interest for me which I thought might be worth spending some time on.” Read more…

Brands are putting the power of animation to the test, using them in everything from commercials to websites to emails. But hiring animators is expensive and simply out of the question for most companies.
