Senator Jeff Flake faces emotional confrontation from survivors over his Kavanaugh vote

TwitterFacebook

On Friday morning, Senator Jeff Flake finally announced that he’d vote to confirm Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.

The Republican from Arizona was previously undecided and was seen as one of the key deciding votes. His last minute decision was particularly heartbreaking for a group of sexual assault survivors gathered near his office, who proceeded to confront him in the Senate elevator and reveal their own stories of abuse.

Women confront Sen. Jeff Flake after he says he’ll vote yes to Kavanuagh: “That’s what you’re telling all women in America, that they don’t matter. They should just keep it to themselves because if they have told the truth you’re just going to help that man to power anyway.” pic.twitter.com/T7fSpyT69E

Stephen Colbert unpacks Christine Blasey Ford’s ‘heartbreaking’ testimony at Kavanaugh hearing

TwitterFacebook

The Late Show host Stephen Colbert has unpacked what he dubbed “one of the longest days I can remember— and keep in mind I’ve been to a Renaissance fair.”

In two monologues, Colbert unpacked Christine Blasey Ford’s “deeply moving … believable and heartbreaking” testimony against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, and then, the rage-filled statement from Kavanaugh himself.

“He came out with a well-coiffed head of steam,” Colbert said, showing a clip of Kavanaugh’s angry testimony.

“Clearly Kavanaugh thought he already faced his Senate grilling, and was upset he was being subjected to more.” Read more…

No matter what happens now, history’s judgment on Kavanaugh is already clear

TwitterFacebook

The date is September 27, 2068. On your neural net’s news feed, you catch a glimpse of an item that says “50th anniversary of Brett Kavanaugh hearings.” You think you vaguely remember something about that from the American history class pills, but the details are vague (you keep confusing the name with Clarence Thomas, for some reason). You fire up the video.

What do you see, through disinterested, utterly neutral future eyes?

You see a woman — quiet, dignified, vulnerable,  heartbreakingly so. She is a neurology professor, and speaks in measured academic tones to an intimidating committee of silent men. She details a sexual assault that took place when she was 15. That’s right, you remember — this is the era when women were just starting to dare speak out about this sort of thing.  Read more…

Congrats to Brett Kavanaugh on getting to be angry

TwitterFacebook

After Dr. Christine Blasey Ford’s heart-wrenching and credible testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday, pundits wondered whether Brett Kavanaugh would adopt a gentler tone during his own appearance.

He did not. Instead, he leaned in to being angry.

He spoke in a near-constant loud monotone. At times, he yelled. At other points, his face scrunched up with rage, appearing nearly vicious. Unlike Ford, who was sympathetic, measured, and vulnerable, Kavanaugh was aggressive. Unabashedly emotional. Self-righteously angry even when he began to cry.

How to cope when the country is debating whether to believe Christine Blasey Ford

TwitterFacebook

The women of America who believe and support sexual assault survivors want a break. They want a reprieve from the attacks on Christine Blasey Ford, who was forced to recall excruciating memories of a high school sexual assault before the Senate Judiciary Committee — and the entire nation — on Thursday. They see themselves, or their mothers, sisters, daughters, and best friends, in Ford’s trauma and her tearful resolve.

They’re exhausted by the prospect that despite Ford’s credible testimony, Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh is still likely to be confirmed by Republicans to a lifelong appointment — the same Republicans who required Ford to answer questions from a career prosecutor. At one point, Sen. Kamala Harris, a Democrat, reassured Ford by saying, “You are not on trial.” Nevertheless, it still felt that’s exactly what was happening to Ford. Read more…
