We need to talk about the ending of ‘Avengers: Infinity War’

Warning: This story contains major spoilers for the ending of Avengers: Infinity War.

Welp, he did it.

In the closing moments of Avengers: Infinity War, Thanos, wielding his now-complete Infinity Gauntlet, manages to wipe out a huge chunk of Marvel heroes – specifically, Bucky, Black Panther, Groot, Scarlet Witch, Falcon, Mantis, Drax, Star-Lord, Doctor Strange, Spider-Man, Maria Hill, and Nick Fury.

It’s not just that they’re dead. They’re turned to dust. They’re disappeared.

Mind you, this is in addition to the deaths of Heimdall, Loki, Gamora, and Vision, which come earlier in the movie. When Marvel promised death and destruction in Infinity War, they were not fucking around. Read more…

‘Avengers: Infinity War’ is less than the sum of its parts

TwitterFacebook

Very late in Avengers: Infinity War, deep into this big apocalyptic battle with Thanos, one hero turns to another and says, “We’re in the end game now.”

It’s a heavy moment, weighed down by the trauma of everything that’s happened so far and everything we know is still to come. It underlines just how apocalyptically massive the stakes are here – how grave the danger is, and how great the cost of fighting it off to live another day.

It’s also a lie.

Infinity War isn’t the end game of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s not even the end game of the Infinity WarInfinity War, it turns out, is the first half of a two-parter, with the second half to come next year in an as-yet-untitled sequel. Read more…

The first full trailer for ‘Venom’ is here

TwitterFacebook

Sony has released the first trailer for Venom, starring Tom Hardy as an antihero who gets tangled up with a mysterious and powerful symbiote.

If the character sounds kind of familiar, you may recall that he’s frequently associated with Spider-Man – Topher Grace played a version of him in 2007’s Spider-Man 3

But this Venom exists separately from Spider-Man. The current Spidey exists in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with all the Avengers, while Venom is off doing his own thing in a different continuity.

And it’s probably just as well. Between all the corporate intrigue and action and whatever else is going on in this trailer, Venom looks like he’s got plenty on his plate already. Read more…

IMAX featurette makes the case for watching ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ in IMAX

TwitterFacebook

The biggest question looming over Avengers: Infinity War is “Who’s going to die?” and we’ve tried our best to answer that here

But the second biggest question might be “How the hell did they manage to get so many characters into one movie?” And while we don’t know yet how it’ll all pan out, we’re thinking it helps if you’ve got an extra-large box if you put them in.

The IMAX featurette above makes a case for watching Infinity War on the biggest screen you can find – all the better to see as much of this movie as possible, including all the little details at the top and bottom of the frame that get cut off in a standard aspect ratio. Read more…

Thanos finally looks cool on the cover of ‘Empire’

TwitterFacebook

There are so many Avengers in Avengers: Infinity War, you guys. More than could possibly fit on one magazine cover! Which is why Empire released six (plus a bonus subscriber cover).

As with the Entertainment Weekly cover, part of the fun is seeing Marvel play mix-and-match. We can only imagine what Shuri will make of Iron Man, or what Gamora and Hulk could possibly have to talk about.

But if you ask us, not all combinations are created equal – which is why we’ve ranked the covers in order of least to most impressive. Read more…

The ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ trailer is missing an Avenger

All your favorite Avengers are back in the latest Infinity War trailer … well, unless you favorite Avenger is Hawkeye. Then you’re SOL, and more than a few Marvel fans have noticed.

I hope ‘Avengers 4’ is “The Search for Hawkeye” and the third act is just everybody at that damn barn trying really hard to convince Hawkeye he’s a valuable part of the team even tho they forgot to call him for the Infinity War.
