‘Krypton’ Super Bowl spot features Superman…’s cape

TwitterFacebook

This spring, Syfy is diving into Superman’s home planet … years before he was even a twinkle in Lara’s eye.

Krypton centers on Seg-El (Cameron Cuffe), who will go on one day to become Kal-El’s grandfather. Right now, though, he’s just a young man trying to decide what to do about the future of Krypton.

Although Superman himself isn’t in the series, his influence can be felt, even in the past – as in this Super Bowl spot above, which shows Seg-El considering the famous red cape that his grandson will go on to wear. Read more…

Democrats, it’s time to fight like Superman for truth, justice, and the American way

TwitterFacebook

Growing up as a comics fan in the UK, I loved Superman more than any other superhero. But even as an impressionable kid I’d wince at his corny catchphrase — that he was fighting for “truth, justice and the American way.” The first two seemed too blindingly obvious, the third a strangely parochial choice of goal for Earth’s most famous immigrant.

Fast forward to 2018, and here I am, a U.S. resident, literally screaming at the Democratic Party that it needs to overcome its muddled messaging — by appropriating the words of a journalist and immigrant whose entire existence speaks to everything Trump isn’t.  Read more…

Former Batman Christian Bale hasn’t seen Ben Affleck’s Batman yet

TwitterFacebook

Between Batman v Superman and Justice League, most of us have had plenty of time to process our feelings about Batfleck.

But one person who’s yet to make up his mind is the previous Batman, Christian Bale – because he hasn’t actually gotten around to seeing those movies yet.

Bale admitted as much on MTV’s Happy Sad Confused podcast. “Yes, I’m interested [in seeing Ben Affleck’s performance],” he said. “My son seemed like he was really interested, but then I realized he just wanted to see that trailer and that was it. And, you know, I tend to go see films that [my kids] want to see.” Read more…

Maybe the problem with ‘Justice League’ is that it’s not enough like ‘Batman v Superman’

TwitterFacebook

Justice League is fine. It’s fine! If you trust the Tomatometer, it is 13 percentage points more fine than its predecessor, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

Justice League earned those points by going out of its way to address the criticisms lobbed at BvS, resulting in a film that’s lighter, funnier, more narratively straightforward.

It’s just not nearly as interesting. And that’s a damn shame.

Whatever its shortcomings, Batman v Superman felt like the product of a single distinctive vision. Maybe not the vision everyone wanted – maybe one that some people found annoying or unpleasant or even downright reprehensible – but a single distinctive vision nonetheless.  Read more…

‘Justice League’ pays tribute to David Bowie and Prince in an unexpected way

TwitterFacebook

Turns out Superman isn’t the only dear departed alien in the DC cinematic universe.

Justice League confirms what we long suspected – that David Bowie and Prince were aliens, too.

Much of Justice League revolves around the world’s collective grief over the death of Superman. It’s evident in the influx of parademons who feed on fear (… just go with it), in the conversations the characters are having, in the news reports and headlines scattered throughout the movie.

In one quick shot, we see a newspaper with a provocative headline splashed across the front page: “Did they return to their planets?” Superman’s photo is right underneath – and so are photos of David Bowie and Prince.  Read more…

That weird ‘Deadpool 2’ teaser actually has a bunch of clues in it

TwitterFacebook

Bob Ross is the newest innocent thing that Deadpool has wonderfully ruined, but fans have been looking beyond the weird humour to find clues for Deadpool 2.

In between the cocaine-riddled Bob Ross impressions, we got bursts of the trailer for Deadpool 2, and from the looks of it there were more than a few not-so-sneaky hints.

Many were happy to see the return of Negasonic Teenage Warhead.

‘Justice League’ is more upbeat than its predecessor, and so are its early reactions

TwitterFacebook

The first reviews are in for the final superhero movie of the year.

Yep, the social-media embargo has lifted on Justice League, and the first wave of reactions is … not bad, actually. Mostly.

Your faithful reporters at Mashable had two very different opinions:

#JusticeLeague is fine. It’s more coherent & less idiosyncratic than Batman v Superman (which I loved, so make of that what you will), and tries very hard to lighten up on the gloom & doom of the DC universe. There are jokes and everything!
