Facebook’s ad platform is facing charges that it has enabled gender-based discrimination against millions of women in a class action suit filed on behalf of three female workers and backed by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). The legal action also names ten employers who are alleged to have used the social media giant’s platform […]

Robots can develop prejudices just like humans

In a fascinating study by researchers at Cardiff University and MIT, we learn that robots can develop prejudices when working together. The robots, which ran inside a teamwork simulator, expressed prejudice against other robots not on their team. In short, write the researchers, “groups of autonomous machines could demonstrate prejudice by simply identifying, copying and […]

‘Crazy Rich Asians’ and the immense pressure to feel seen

TwitterFacebook

Recently, the LA Times asked me to name the first time I saw myself represented onscreen. The answer I gave the interviewer was long and winding and delved into the many different ways I have and haven’t seen myself at the movies – demographically, relationally, emotionally.

By the time it got to print, though, it had been pared down to nine words: “I don’t know that I’ve ever had the experience.” Fair enough.

But that’s changing now, at least in theory. After decades of little to no Asian representation in American pop culture, we find ourselves now in a veritable boomThe Meg, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, and Searching are all out this month; Bao and Kim’s Convenience hit last month; Killing Eve is up for Emmys next month; and Fresh Off the Boat is back the month after that.  Read more…

The CBS sexual harassment exposé is a reminder that this was never just about one bad guy

At this point, the sexual harassment allegations against CBS head Les Moonves sound sickeningly, depressingly familiar.

City rallies behind 13-year-old entrepreneur after a racist moron calls the cops

You’d think people would stop calling the cops on young black kids who aren’t actually affecting their lives in the slightest, but here we are. At least this time the end of the story is a bit more heart-warming.
Jaequan Faulkner, 13, set up a little…

Papa John’s is removing disgraced founder from its logo

TwitterFacebook

As far as his company is concerned, Papa John is Papa gone.

According to an AP report, Papa John’s founder and former CEO John Schnatter will be removed from all company marketing materials — including pizza boxes — after it was revealed that he used the n-word on a conference call in May.

“The Board of Directors of Papa John’s accepted Mr. Schnatter’s resignation as Chairman of the Board earlier this week,” current CEO Steve Ritchie wrote in an open letter for the brand’s website. “It has also been decided he will no longer be in any of the advertising or marketing materials associated with the brand.” Read more…

Papa John’s founder used the n-word on a conference call

TwitterFacebook

If you haven’t already, it’s probably time to reconsider your trash pizza alliance: According to a report from Forbes, John Schnatter, the founder and former CEO of Papa John’s, used the n-word during a conference call in May.

The call, which was between Schnatter and executives from the marketing agency Laundry Service, was reportedly a role-playing session aimed at preventing future Schnatter-related PR disasters. (Remember when he blamed bad sales on peaceful NFL protests? What a guy.)

That initiative was not a success, to say the least.

Per Forbes, Schnatter responded to a question about distancing himself from racist trolls by pointing out that “Colonel Sanders [of Kentucky Fried Chicken] called blacks n——-s.” Later in the call, he brought up his childhood in Indiana, where, he said, “people used to drag African-Americans from trucks until they died.” Read more…

Starbucks apologizes for racial slur written on Latino customer’s cup

TwitterFacebook

Less than two weeks before Starbucks is set to close its 8,000 company-owned stores for an afternoon of racial-bias training, the company issued yet another apology for a racist incident that occurred in one of its California stores.

On Tuesday, at a Starbucks in La Cañada Flintridge, California, a Latino customer named Pedro reportedly had the racist slur, “BEANER,” written on his coffee cup in place of his name.
