How Silicon Valley should celebrate Labor Day

Ask any 25-year old engineer what Labor Day means to him or her, and you might get an answer like: it’s the surprise three-day weekend after a summer of vacationing. Or it’s the day everyone barbecues at Dolores Park. Or it’s the annual Tahoe trip where everyone gets to relive college. Or simply, it’s the […]

If you have a role for Benedict Cumberbatch but his female co-stars aren’t receiving equal pay, he’s going to say no.

The Doctor Strange and Sherlock star is using his sizable platform to push for positive, necessary change. He said as much in a recent interview with Radio Times, during which he articulated his thoughts on gender equality very clearly.

“Equal pay and a place at the table are the central tenets of feminism,” he said. “Look at your quotas. Ask what women are being paid, and say: ‘If she’s not paid the same as the men, I’m not doing it.'” Read more…

John McEnroe earns 10 times more than Martina Navratilova for Wimbledon commentating

Tennis star Martina Navratilova has claimed she gets paid a mere tenth of John McEnroe’s salary for her work as a commentator at Wimbledon.

Speaking on BBC Panorama, the Czech tennis champion—who’s considered among the best female tennis players of all time— revealed that she gets paid about £15K ($21K) for her role as a Wimbledon commentator, while John McEnroe earns £150K ($209K) for the same work.

Navratilova said it was “a shock” to discover the difference in earnings. “Unless John McEnroe’s doing a whole bunch of stuff outside Wimbledon, he’s getting at least ten times as much money than I am for very comparable work,” Navratilova said.  Read more…

Want to be mad? Claire Foy made less than Matt Smith on ‘The Crown’

TwitterFacebook

Two producers on Netflix’s The Crown revealed Tuesday that Matt Smith made more than Claire Foy for the first two seasons of the show.

“Going forward, no one gets paid more than the Queen,” said Left Bank creative director Suzanne Mackie, per Variety.

That’s the correct response, but Foy is no longer the Queen wearing the titular crown, so it’s not like it does her much good.

It sort of makes sense Smith was offered more initially – producers acknowledged he was a known commodity from Doctor Who – but Foy was the evident breakout star, earning multiple nominations, and wins at the Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild Awards. So what’s their excuse for Season 2? Read more…

Viola Davis tells Hollywood ‘pay me what I’m worth’

TwitterFacebook

As Time’s Up battles for women’s equal pay, advocates can’t ignore that the wage gap is even more glaring for women of colorViola Davis reiterated this on Wednesday in a conversation with Women in the World CEO Tina Brown.

“We get probably a tenth of what a Caucasian woman gets,” Davis said regarding actresses of color. “And I’m number one on the call sheet.”

Davis was speaking to the fact that she’s one of the most prolific actresses – black or otherwise – of her time. She has an Emmy, an Oscar, and a Tony; when she’s in a movie, she’s one of the stars, and a star shouldn’t be scrabbling for her salary.  Read more…

E! boss defends Catt Sadler’s wage gap and gets immediately called out

TwitterFacebook

Today in Men Make Excuses, the head of E! Entertainment, Frances Berwick, cited everything from “misinformation” to the role of “expertise” as reasons for the controversy over female host Catt Sadler getting paid nearly half as much as her male counterpart, Jason Kennedy.

Sadler left her long-standing position at E! late last month after becoming aware of the enormous pay gap and decided to take a stand as the industry’s culture of misogyny faces a seismic shift.

But in statements made at the Television Critics Association press tour on Tuesday, Berwick claimed that the two co-hosts, “had different roles, and therefore different salaries.” He went on to explain that, “Catt was focused on daytime; Jason Kennedy is on prime evening news, plus red carpet. Our employees’ salaries are based on their roles and their expertise, regardless of gender. So we wish Catt well, but I hope that sets the record straight on that.” Read more…

Latina Equal Pay Day is in November, and that’s a problem

TwitterFacebook

Seven months ago, women marked Equal Pay Day—the day women had to work until in 2017 to earn what men did in 2016.

The April 4 date was based on an average statistic—80 cents to the dollar—that lumps all women’s earnings together. More than half a year later, Thursday marks Latina Equal Pay Day.

Latina women earn 54 cents for every dollar white men make. It takes just two months shy of two years for Latina women to earn what white men did in the single year prior. In other words, an extra 10 months.

Latina Equal Pay Day follows Black Women’s Equal Pay Day in July, Native American Women’s Equal Pay Day in September, Asian-American Women’s Equal Pay Day in March, and the aforementioned averaged Equal Pay Day in April.  Read more…
