Two surfers, same waves. But people aren’t cool with the difference in pay.

Over the weekend, surfers competed in the Ballito Pro, which takes place in South Africa’s east.

In the Billabong Junior Series, the under-18 mens winner was Indonesia’s Rio Waida, while the womens competition was won by South Africa’s Zoe Steyn.

While the news would invite congratulations, a Facebook post showing the two winners has angered people.

As the photo shows, Waida received 8,000 SAR ($577), while Steyn — who was standing right beside him — received exactly half of that. It’s… not a good look.

“Did the girls surf a different ocean that was easier we don’t know about? This is pathetic,” reads one comment.  Read more…

Kids learn the bitter realities of the gender pay gap

TwitterFacebook

Ah, childhood. A blissful time when harsh realities like the gender pay gap are so distant.

But these kids are about to learn a very important lesson.

This video by the Finance Sector of Norway shows four pairs of kids (one girl and one boy in each pair) and asks them to complete a simple task. The kids work together to get the job done and are rewarded with candies—but there’s a catch.

The boy in each pair receives much more than the girl. The kids look confused and when they’re given the explanation as to why the girl has less, they protest.

Once they realize what a dumb standard this is, the kids are happy to divide up their candies—the same reward for the same job. Read more…

This game tells the gender wage gap to f*ck off, and it’s exactly what we needed

Jane Friedhoff is a riot grrrl game developerWhat does that mean? She creates power fantasies for women that let them tell the status quo to fuck right off — through the joy of unadulterated play.

Her latest title, Lost Wage Rampage, essentially reappropriates the hyper-masculinity of Grand Theft Auto, replacing the aimless male rage of the original driving game with the very real rage women feel after realizing they’re being paid less than their male coworkers.

“It’s a game about gender inequality wrapped up in an ’80s-action-movie-comedy-fairytale,” described its animator and artist, Marlowe Dobbe.  Read more…

Why do women invest less than men?

TwitterFacebook

Gender equality is the topic du jour — from the gender wage gap to gender bias in the workplace, people are discussing the issues like never before, and it’s about time. But one iteration of gender equality hasn’t received the attention it deserves, and truly needs — the gender gap in investing.

In a study by Moneyfarm, over half of women without financial investments in Britain cite a lack of funds as the most common barrier to investing. And almost 25 per cent say they do not have any disposable income in a typical month – versus just 14 per cent of men.

Women’s aversion to investing is well documented, but little progress has been made in the way of a solution. Due to different career trajectories and predicted longer lifespans, among other factors, women need to be investing for their futures now.   Read more…

Female Uber drivers make less than their male counterparts, but it’s not what you think

TwitterFacebook

Even driving Uber while female comes with a pay gap — but it’s different from the systemic problem of lower pay seen in other industries.

Stanford, University of Chicago, and Uber economists looked at more than a million Uber rides in the U.S. from January 2015 through March 2017 and found a roughly 7 percent gap. This lower hourly pay rate is due to several factors including driving speed and experience gaming the app.

Drivers are paid based on a formula that doesn’t include gender — just miles, time on the road, a surge multiplier, and some other ride-based incentives — so gender shouldn’t impact pay. But the gap exists anyhow. Women on average earn $20.04 an hour, while men bring in $21.28. Read more…

E! boss defends Catt Sadler’s wage gap and gets immediately called out

TwitterFacebook

Today in Men Make Excuses, the head of E! Entertainment, Frances Berwick, cited everything from “misinformation” to the role of “expertise” as reasons for the controversy over female host Catt Sadler getting paid nearly half as much as her male counterpart, Jason Kennedy.

Sadler left her long-standing position at E! late last month after becoming aware of the enormous pay gap and decided to take a stand as the industry’s culture of misogyny faces a seismic shift.

But in statements made at the Television Critics Association press tour on Tuesday, Berwick claimed that the two co-hosts, “had different roles, and therefore different salaries.” He went on to explain that, “Catt was focused on daytime; Jason Kennedy is on prime evening news, plus red carpet. Our employees’ salaries are based on their roles and their expertise, regardless of gender. So we wish Catt well, but I hope that sets the record straight on that.” Read more…

TwitterFacebook

Comedian Amy Schumer put E! News on blast and is encouraging others walking the red carpet at Sunday’s Golden Globes television and movie award show to do the same to promote pay equality.

Schumer said in an Instagram post she’ll be letting the entertainment network and audiences know she stands with Catt Sadler and equal pay for women in the entertainment industry and beyond.

Former E! News host Sadler left the network last month after learning her co-host — a man — made almost double what she did for the same job.  Read more…
