Jimmy Kimmel comes for Roy Moore and his ‘Christian values’ with one perfect tweet

Fake Roy Moore accuser tries to trick the Washington Post and fails spectacularly

TwitterFacebook

Project Veritas, you just played yourself.

The group, founded by conservative “guerrilla journalist” James O’Keefe, tried to expose the Washington Post but ended up looking pretty dumb in the end.

It all started when a woman approached the Post with a story. She said that when she was 15 years old, she’d been impregnated by Roy Moore, the Alabama senate candidate who has been accused of sexually harassing and assaulting teenage girls.

But when the Washington Post fact-checked her story, it didn’t add up — and then they watched her walk into the New York offices of Project Veritas. The “sting” was supposed to expose, I don’t know, some liberal conspiracy against Moore. Instead it showed just how professional and thorough the Washington Post is when it comes to checking facts. Brands have no idea how to deal with being caught in a political firestorm

TwitterFacebook

Coffeemaker wreckage, political pizza purchases, and erratic boycott calls flooded social media this week as major brands struggle to navigate the riptide of America’s culture wars.

Controversies like Fox News host Sean Hannity’s defense of accused sex predator and Alabama senatorial candidate Roy Moore and NFL player protests have once again thrust consumer companies into the middle of loud fights over charged topics like racism in America and society’s treatment of sexual assault.

Brands have responded to this activism with all the rigid conviction of an inflatable tube man at a car lot.  Read more…

Stephen Colbert dissects Roy Moore’s sexual assault allegations with brutal wit

TwitterFacebook

The Roy Moore sexual assault scandal reached new heights of creepiness after The New Yorker reported that the Republican candidate for Senate in Alabama was banned from a shopping mall in the 1980s, when he was an assistant district attorney.

Moore, who is now under fire from fellow Republicans and House Speaker Paul Ryan, was the main target of Stephen Colbert’s Late Show monologue. And boy, did he deliver.

“Five women have accused Moore of sexual misconduct against them when they were teens, and now we’ve learned that in the ’80s, when he was an assistant district attorney, Moore was banned from an Alabama shopping mall for bothering teenage girls,” said Colbert.  Read more…

Women share their teen photos to slam Roy Moore’s alleged sexual misconduct

TwitterFacebook

Since apparently believing women about sexual abuse that happened when they were young is just too much (and it’s easier for politicians to give a “safe” response that effectively protects abusers), Twitter users decided to clear things up with a powerful hashtag: #MeAt14.

Women shared photos of themselves at 14 in order to show that at that age, a person is still a child — and therefore incapable of giving sexual consent to a 32-year-old man … like Senate candidate Roy Moore, as allegations against the Alabama judge suggest.

‘SNL’ takes Roy Moore to task with some Alabama sensibility, courtesy of Kate McKinnon

Another week, another 34,989 sexual assault and harassment stories in the news (that’s an official number). On Saturday night, Saturday Night Live tackled the highly icky report that Alabama Republican senatorial candidate Roy Moore engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a minor with the man whose seat he’s filling: Jeff Sessions.

This week’s cold open started with a sensible Vice President Mike Pence (Beck Bennett) counseling Judge Moore (Mikey Day) on the best course of action. His counsel: Stepping aside isn’t the worst thing in the world, if you look at it the right way.

So many politicians gave the same terrible response to the Roy Moore abuse allegations

TwitterFacebook

The Washington Post has published a detailed account of allegations that Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore initiated a sexual encounter and pursued a relationship with a 14-year-old girl  when he was 32.

As politicians  — and most Republicans — responded to the shocking story of underage sexual abuse, a problematic theme emerged. Each statement relied on the phrase “if proven true,” or a variation of that.

That might sound logical on its face — the allegations against Moore, now 70, haven’t been adjudicated in a court of law — but the phrase allows the commenting politician to have it both ways while relying on negative stereotypes about survivors of abuse. Sex abuse is objectively bad, “if proven true” seems to say, but let’s not forget that these women could be lying.  Read more…
