Sacha Baron Cohen, crime-fighting Obama show why satire is a dying art under Trump

TwitterFacebook

Nearly 20 months into the international embarrassment that is the Trump administration, faced with the prospect that its president may well be a Russian asset of some sort, Americans are in dire need of a laugh.

Yet political comedians seem incapable of beating or even matching the sheer self-evident ridiculousness of the moment. (Heck, we feel their pain: It’s an impossible task for journalists to keep up with the news, let alone comedians.)

In Trump Year 2, satire may not be dead exactly — but it’s certainly on life support.

Sacha Baron Cohen’s Who Is America? created quite the buzz leading up to its release, with prominent conservative politicians reacting with outrage as they realized Cohen was effectively pranking them.

The series premiere is now streaming on Showtime (free for a limited time), and in true Cohen fashion, it’s got people talking.

Sacha Baron Cohen got a bunch of GOP congressmen to say arming toddlers is a good idea

TwitterFacebook

Am I surprised that a bunch of Republican congressman endorsed arming toddlers? No. But, as usual, I wish I had higher expectations.

Sacha Baron Cohen’s new show, Who Is America?, began streaming Saturday night before its official premiere on Sunday. As you probably already know thanks to Sarah Palin’s extensive complaining, it’s classic Cohen fare — the comedian has been interviewing U.S. politicians and lobbyists while wearing disguises for the past year.

In a portion of the first episode, Cohen assumes the persona of Erran Morrad, an “Israeli anti-terrorism expert” pushing a program called Kinderguardians, which would train children as young as three how to use firearms.  Read more…

Roy Moore ALSO duped by Sacha Baron Cohen. What is wrong with people?

TwitterFacebook

Sacha Baron Cohen really fooled some big names in right-wing politics while shooting his new show.

Far-right politician Roy Moore was apparently duped into participating in Cohen’s upcoming series Who Is America?, where the comedian went undercover for a year to interview unwitting politicians. While we don’t know if Moore will actually be featured in the show, the disgraced former judge confirmed he was interviewed by Cohen in a statement obtained by NBC News.

Sarah Palin tears into Sacha Baron Cohen after being ‘duped’ into fake interview

TwitterFacebook

Sarah Palin thought she was going to be in a “legit Showtime historical documentary.” Turns out, it was just a prank by trickster Sacha Baron Cohen.

For his anticipated new seven-episode series Who Is America? Cohen has apparently been filming interviews with U.S. politicians for a year — but often in disguise or undercover.

And that includes Palin, who says she was “duped” into travelling across the country with her daughter for an interview with Cohen, who “had heavily disguised himself as a disabled US Veteran, fake wheelchair and all.” The interview was apparently requested through a “speakers bureau.” Read more…
