Woman gets email rejecting her for a job because she’s not a man

TwitterFacebook

Finding out you didn’t meet the requirements for a job you wanted is always tough to hear.

But, a company in Spain is facing an almighty backlash after it sent a candidate an email telling her she didn’t get hired because she isn’t a man.

Carla Forcada, who lives in Barcelona, Spain, applied for the role of account executive at PR agency Impulsa Comunicación. After sending her CV, she received an email from the PR firm telling her that they were looking for a man because the role would require work with Coca-Cola and Carglass accounts. She tweeted a screenshot of the email she received, which is written in Spanish, alongside the comment: “Unbelievable to think that some companies still don’t support gender equality in the workplace.”  Read more…

Someone Photoshopped the male artists out of a festival poster and the result is telling

TwitterFacebook

It’s a bleak state of affairs when you look at the lineup for a festival and you can’t see any female artists on the line-up.

Lily Allen tweeted an edited version of Wireless festival’s poster with the male artists photoshopped out. The finished result showed that the three-day festival had booked just three female artists—Mabel, Cardi B, and Lisa Mercedez.

The image was created by journalist Luke Bailey, who tweeted that “Wireless festival without the men is… not great.”

Here’s what the unedited poster looks like: Read more…

Morgan Freeman had 1 very blunt comment about his SAG Award statue

TwitterFacebook

Just because you won an award doesn’t mean you can’t criticise it.

On Sunday, Morgan Freeman picked up a Lifetime Achievement Award at the SAGs.

He had some no-nonsense feedback about the statue, though:

Here’s a close-up of said statue. It does look pretty masculine, doesn’t it?

Freeman’s comments were well-received on Twitter.

Barbra Streisand calls out female directors being overlooked in powerful Time’s Up speech

TwitterFacebook

Barbra Streisand couldn’t quite believe her ears when she was informed backstage that she was the only woman to ever win the Best Director award at the Golden Globes.

“Did I hear right?” she said, puzzled, on-stage when she recounted this anecdote prior to announcing the nominees for Best Motion Picture.

“I was the only woman—did I hear right?— the only woman to get the Best Director award,” Streisand said. “And, you know, that was 1984. That was 34 years ago.”

“Folks, time’s up!” Streisand bellowed.  Read more…

Oprah’s must-see speech at the Globes will make you cry — and inspire you to take action

TwitterFacebook

There’s a reason why, throughout the Golden Globes, stars have been whispering her name like a  prayer: Oprah.

The queen’s acceptance speech for the esteemed Cecil B. DeMille award (essentially a lifetime achievement award) at the Golden Globes Sunday night was a rallying cry for the disenfranchised that managed to perfectly articulate the #MeToo moment.

“It is not lost on me that at this moment there’s some little girls watching as I become the first black woman to be given the same award,” she said, speaking about watching Sidney Poitier as a child. “It is an honor and it is a privilege to share the evening with all of them.” Read more…

Train company responds to woman’s complaint about sexist behaviour with, uh, more sexism

TwitterFacebook

Heads up, companies: when a woman makes a complaint about the misogynist behaviour of a male employee, take her seriously.

Sadly, this isn’t what happened when a woman complained to a UK train company about the dismissive and patronising conduct of one of their train conductors. Instead, her complaint was met with a snarky and completely tone deaf response.

Emily Lucinda Cole tweeted a complaint to Virgin Trains East Coast that an older male train manager dismissed her in a “patronising” way, calling her “honey.”

When virgin trains mess up and the older male train manager in the resulting conversation dismisses you with that hideously patronising word women shudder at in contexts such as these: “honey” @virgin_trainsEC.
