Bearded mermen pose for ‘dudeoir’ calendar to raise money for a worthy cause

TwitterFacebook

Behold the “Merb’ys”—a breed of Canadian bearded mermen flapping their fur and fins for a good cause.

The gentlemen of Newfoundland and Labrador Beard and Moustache Club are posing in nowt but their merman garb for a dudeoir-style calendar to raise money for mental health organisation Spirit Horse NL.

And, the photos certainly don’t disappoint. The calendar—which can be previewed online—features bearded mermen posing in pumpkin patches, pubs, and on various beaches.

The Merb’ys are thus-named because “the Newfoundland mermen are a different breed,” says Hasan Hai, founder of the beard and moustache club. Hai came up with the idea of a merman calendar after a friend of his posted a photo from a mercreature themed dudeoir shoot on his Facebook wall.  Read more…

A new nonprofit aims to put music back into schools

TwitterFacebook

When a child picks up an instrument — whether it’s a guitar, trombone, flute, or cello — they’re receiving a unique brand of education that cannot be taught from a textbook.

However, there more than 3.8 million pre-K through grade 12 students in the United States who have zero access to music education. Whether this stems from a lack of funding or a lack of interest, students across America are missing out on the type of valuable lessons that can be taught only through music education.

A new nonprofit called The GRAMMY Music Education Coalition aims to dramatically lessen this number by covering the expensive costs of musical instruments, recording equipment, and professional development courses for teachers in Philadelphia, New York City, and Nashville.    Read more…

Hey ‘Stranger Things’ fans, maybe don’t sexualize kids

Millie Bobbie Brown, the 13-year-old actress who plays Eleven on the hit Netflix series Stranger Things, has been on a weeks-long press tour promoting the show’s new season.

Everywhere she turns up, whether it’s Good Morning America or her show’s premier party, Brown looks playful, chic, and glamorous — just like you’d expect a young teen to dress when she’s famous and has access to incredible fashion.

Except some are interpreting Brown’s fashion choices as an invitation to see her as grown up.

A retired senior NBCUniversal executive, for example, recently shared a photo of Brown at the premiere wearing a black long-sleeve leather dress and sleek hair with the caption “Millie Bobby Brown just grew up in front of our eyes. (She’s 13!)”  Read more…

LGBTQ election victories finally give progressives something to celebrate

TwitterFacebook

A glimmer of progressive hope has risen out of the Trump-inspired darkness. In Tuesday’s off-year elections, LGBTQ candidates — particularly transgender candidates — received historic victories across the country.

“The biggest story out last night is that 2017 is the year of the transgender candidate,” said Elliot Imse, director of communications for the Victory Fund and Victory Institute, an organization promoting LGBTQ representation in government.

LGBTQ candidates were part of a larger trend of Democratic wins across the country. Democratic governors were elected in New Jersey and Virginia, and democrats made significant gains in the Virginia House of Delegates.  Read more…
