Everyone is comparing Trump’s border policy to ‘Handmaid’s Tale,’ even the creator

TwitterFacebook

Spoilers ahead: If you haven’t watched Handmaid’s Tale, you’ve been warned.

The Trump administration’s forcible separation of children from their families at the U.S. border has everyone comparing it to The Handmaid’s Tale — including Margaret Atwood herself.

The author of the dystopian classic has pulled many of the narrative’s horrific happenings from history, and on Tuesday, Atwood acknowledged how believable Trump’s cruel border policy would be within the Republic of Gilead.

That is why I did not put anything into #TheHandmaidsTale that had not happened somewhere… including the snatching of children from their parents. Believable? Alas yeshttps://t.co/VGw8LkiCIV

This Canada theory may completely change the game for ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’

TwitterFacebook

The Handmaid’s Tale is part cautionary tale, part dystopian anti-fantasy, and part voluntarily once-a-week anxiety appointment for its fans.

Since the show eclipsed the plot of the Margaret Atwood book upon which it is based, there has been an increased amount of viewer speculation as to what fresh hell the show will rain upon its unsuspecting viewers in the coming weeks, speculation that is fueled by two dueling parties: those who believe that there may be a happy-ish ending for June, Janine, Moira, Emily, and Nick, and those who think that the show’s dark turns will continue spiraling into a climatically depressing ending where hope will die for good.  Read more…

Don’t be fooled by that girl power ending on ‘The Handmaid’s Tale.’

TwitterFacebook

Few shows are as committed to anything as The Handmaid’s Tale is to delivering deeply upsetting content.

The first six episodes of the show’s second season have more or less been an unyielding loop of horrors that have driven home the futility of fighting against a fundamentalist regime as powerful and twisted as Gilead, and audiences have been treated to the sights of a thwarted escape attempt, the murder of innocents, mental reprogramming, teeth falling out just all over the damn place, and the justified poisoning of Marisa Tomei.

‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ meets ‘Sex and the City’ in this hilarious ‘SNL’ sketch

Saturday Night Live posed a question this week: Could the grim dystopia of The Handmaid’s Tale, where women are roughly on the same level as cattle, ever really work with a lighthearted, girls-just-wanna-have-fun spin, a la Sex and the City?
Nope…

How to watch ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ online — and why you should

TwitterFacebook

In the long absence of Game of Thrones, the show that seemingly everyone’s telling you to watch now is The Handmaid’s Tale. And for damn good reason.

Based on the novel of the same name by Canadian author Margaret Atwood, The Handmaid’s Tale tells of a dystopian future in which women are forced into sexual service in order to populate a society suffering from low fertility rates. Elisabeth Moss stars in the titular role.

Since its premiere on Hulu in 2017, the show has received critical acclaim and won several Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Drama Series — the first streaming show to do soRead more…

‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Season 2 teaser is done playing games

TwitterFacebook

The Handmaid’s Tale just served up an International Women’s Day teaser of Offred and her sisters fighting back. After a first season that explored women losing all their agency, Season 2 shows shows the women of Gilead refusing to be oppressed any longer.

The teaser is mostly a few flashes of footage and imagery – including Offred in front of a noose and a weeping Moira (Samira Wiley) – narrated with the emotionless cadence Elisabeth Moss perfected as Offred. She lists the requirements of the handmaid like commandments: “Wear the red dress, wear the wings,” and eventually, “Shut your mouth, be a good girl, roll over and spread your legs, yes ma’am, may the lord open.” Read more…

Elizabeth Moss says ‘Handmaid’s Tale’ Season 2 will be ‘darker’ — somehow

TwitterFacebook

The Handmaid’s Tale feels unstoppable at every award show, and Season 2 appears to have no intention of slowing down — or letting us off the hook.

Over the weekend at the TV Critics Association press tour, Elizabeth Moss warned reporters: “It’s a dark season. I would say arguably it’s darker than Season 1 — if that’s possible.”

At the forefront of that darkness is the conflicting, traumatizing experience of being an expecting mother in Gilead. “[Show creator Bruce Miller] and I always talked about this impending birth of this child growing inside her like a ticking time bomb.” Read more…

‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Season 2 trailer wants everybody to look what’s going down

TwitterFacebook

If you thought The Handmaid’s Tale couldn’t possibly get any darker or more disturbing than Season 1, allow the first Season 2 trailer to disabuse you of that notion.

There’s no actual dialogue in the video, just a lot of haunting imagery – of women and men being abused, of the barren Colonies, of a pissed-off June (a.k.a. Offred) looking ready to burn it all down.

All of it is set to a creepy slowed-down of Buffalo Springfield, because apparently not even Gilead is immune to that particular trailer trend.

The Handmaid’s Tale Season 2 premieres April 25. Read more…
