Tellonym, an anonymous messaging app, is freaking parents out

An app is once again making it easier for teens to talk trash about each other.

There is growing worry among parents, digital watchdog organizations, and schools about an app called Tellonym. The app lets users ask and answer questions about each other anonymously — a concept that some say is enabling cyberbullying and cruelty.

Founded in 2016 by a trio of teenaged students in Germany, Tellonym says on the App Store that it has 13 million users worldwide; the app monitoring service SensorTower reports that the app had 600,000 downloads in January 2019.  Read more…

Donald Trump referred to Stormy Daniels as ‘horseface’ because we are in the worst timeline

Donald Trump hit a new low in his presidency — if that’s even still possible — when he smashed out a tweet Tuesday morning referring to Stormy Daniels as “Horseface,” confirming we are living in the worst possible timeline. 

“Federal Judge throws out Stormy Danials lawsuit versus Trump. Trump is entitled to full legal fees.” @FoxNews Great, now I can go after Horseface and her 3rd rate lawyer in the Great State of Texas. She will confirm the letter she signed! She knows nothing about me, a total con!

The tweet was in response to the Monday decision by a federal judge to dismiss Daniels’ defamation suit against Trump. The claim lawsuit was filed when Trump tweeted that Daniels’ claims of being intimidated to stay quiet about their alleged affair was a “total con job.”  Read more…

Dear Prince William, this is why anonymity online is important

In unveiling a “national action plan” to tackle cyberbullying, Prince William reflected on the need to take responsibility for our actions online, calling anonymity online “really, really dangerous.”

The debate around anonymity is as old as the internet — we could even call it its original sin — and is still the underlining, problematic elephant in the room when we talk about trolls, fake news, cyberbullying, alt-right activism, and so on. 

On the one hand, the lack of a real link between your name and your online identity encourages participation, and fosters imagination and the freedom that comes with it.  Read more…
