The other smartphone business

With the smartphone operating system market sewn up by Google’s Android platform, which has a close to 90% share globally, leaving Apple’s iOS a slender (but lucrative) premium top-slice, a little company called Jolla and its Linux-based Sailfish OS is a rare sight indeed: A self-styled ‘independent alternative’ that’s still somehow in business. The Finnish […]

Finns troll Trump with photos of themselves raking leaves

TwitterFacebook

Donald Trump’s comment about raking leaves has left some Finns scratching their heads.

It comes after a visit to the fire-ravaged Paradise in California on Saturday, where Trump suggested people could be cleaning up leaves to prevent blazes.

“You look at other countries where they do it differently and it’s a whole different story. I was with the President of Finland and he said we are a forest nation. He called it a forest nation,” Trump told reporters.

“And they spend a lot of time on raking and cleaning and doing things, and they don’t have any problem.” Read more…

Ultimate.ai nabs $1.3M for a customer service AI focused on non-English markets

For customer service, Ultimate.ai‘s thesis is it’s not humans or AI but humans and AI. An electric vehicle is the perfect space for a car singalong

Belting out a Journey classic from the passenger seat goes hand-in-hand with an electric vehicle, mostly because the cars are super quiet, thanks to those emission-free battery-powered motors. Everyone can hear and appreciate your lyrical skills. Or your passion that makes up for those skills.

To show off how otherwise silent their rides are, clean energy company Fortum, which runs a charging network in the Nordic area with more than 2,000 electric car charger stations, is offering free trips in an electric shuttle — the BMW i3 — at the Finnish music festival Ruisrock next weekend.  Read more…

Would you eat this?

A bakery in Finland has rolled out bread made from crushed crickets, said to be the first of its kind.

The bread is made using flour ground from dried crickets, as well as wheat flour and seeds.

Each loaf costs $4.72 (€3.99), contains around 70 crickets and has more protein than your average loaf of wheat bread.
