NBC taps ‘SNL’ anchors for Emmy Awards

TwitterFacebook

NBC will reportedly turn to Saturday Night Live‘s “Weekend Update” anchors Michael Che and Colin Jost to host the 2018 Emmy Awards.

This marks a change from several years of white-male late night hosts (well, a gradual change) and increases likelihood of more SNL cast members joining the telecast (KATE. MCKINNON).

“We’re proud to be the first duo hosting the Emmys since Jenna Elfman and David Hyde Pierce, and somehow that’s a real fact,” the duo told Variety. Wow, how is that a fact?

With so many award shows in the last few years being emceed by late night hosts, Che and Jost are SNL‘s next best thing. They aren’t the most prolific or most tenured cast members (Kenan Thompson has been there 15 years), but as the show’s head writers they have a unique grasp of the intersection of news and entertainment.  Read more…

Tina Fey is coming home to host Saturday Night Live May 19. She’ll be joined by musical guest Nicki Minaj in the show’s traditional spring lineup of heavy-hitters.

SNL already separately announced May 5 host Donald Glover (with musical guest Childish Gambino – who’da thunk?). On Wednesday the show also revealed Amy Schumer with Kacey Musgraves on May 12, and Fey and Minaj on May 19.

Fey spent six years as an SNL cast member (and three more as a writer) until 2006 before premiering 30 Rock on NBC (a show largely inspired by her experiences at SNL). This is her sixth time hosting, and now she’s a Broadway personality with the Mean Girls musical. Since Fey lives and works in New York, she’s also made numerous SNL cameos, including as recently as Natalie Portman’s Feb. 3 episode. Read more…

Donald Glover/Childish Gambino to pull double duty on ‘SNL’

TwitterFacebook

Donald Glover will be pulling a rare double-duty on Saturday Night Live in May.

Saturday Night Live announced Sunday morning that renaissance man Donald Glover will be hosting the show on May 5 with musical guest Childish Gambino, a.k.a. the rapper alter ego of Donald Glover.

May 5 will be Glover’s first time hosting SNL and also his first time as the show’s musical guest. Only a handful of people have held down both roles in SNL history; Glover will be joining the ranks of Lady Gaga, Justin Timberlake, and Britney Spears, to name a few. Read more…

SNL roasts Mark Zuckerberg on Weekend Update

The role of Mark Zuckerberg went to Alex Moffat this weekend on Saturday Night Live’s Weekend Update. While some bits were harmless and hilarious — “Poke! Poke! Remember that feature?” asked Moffat as he poked Jost in the shoulder. “Poke! It was flirting for cowards.” — the Facebook CEO probably didn’t laugh much on Saturday […]

Here’s why Bill Hader broke character on Weekend Update

TwitterFacebook

We can’t help but love it when performers break character on Saturday Night Live, which is exactly what happened when Bill Hader brought back Stefon while hosting on March 17.

He was joined on “Weekend Update” by comedian John Mulaney, who writes Stefon, and who whispered a little something in Hader’s ear to make him break while live.

Mulaney played Stefon’s lawyer, and he whispered in Hader’s ear: “My girlfriend works at Yoshinoya beef bowl.” Yup, that’s what set him off.

To be fair, Hader always breaks while playing Stefon, the nightlife connoisseur who ended Hader’s tenure at the show by running away and marrying Seth Meyers. Hader appeared on Meyers’ show this week to discuss the episode and jokes that made them laugh over the years. Read more…
