Gawker founder Nick Denton: Gossip helped take down Harvey Weinstein and many more

Hardly a day has gone by in the past week in which another major figure in media, politics, or entertainment has not become the subject of a sexual harassment scandal. 

And almost all of those stories were on Gawker years ago. 

“Gossip, though it draws those motivated by envy and resentment, is also a tool of the powerless. It’s a mechanism for coordination,” wrote Gawker founder Nick Denton in a blog post on Monday

The post is notable because Denton has recently kept a low profile recently. Once a fixture of the New York media scene, he’s been under the radar since Gawker declared bankruptcy and was sold to Univision.  Read more…

The two had been dating since January 2017, when a photo of them canoodling outside of a restaurant surfaced. Throughout their relationship, they made several public appearances together, including the 2017 Met Gala.

“She and Abel have been going back and forth for a few months about their relationship,” People‘s unnamed source explained. “It’s been hard with him being on tour and her shooting in New York. That wasn’t easy on them.” Read more…

Netflix cancels ‘House of Cards’ after Kevin Spacey allegations

Netflix has confirmed the final season of House of Cards, per Variety and other outlets. 

Following allegations of sexual misconduct against star Kevin Spacey from actor Anthony Rapp, the streaming platform revealed Monday that the show’s upcoming sixth season — currently in production — would be its last.

It’s unclear if this is a direct response from Netflix to the heated conversation about Spacey following Sunday night’s disturbing revelations. 

Spacey, who has been nominated for several awards for his role on the show, issued a public statement in which he came out as a gay man that was heavily criticized for missing the point. Read more…

The 3 wildest things we learned about Trump’s former campaign advisor and Russia

A lot of folks anticipated the indictment of former Donald Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort on Monday. But very few, if any, publicly predicted the (newly revealed) arrest of Trump foreign policy advisor George Papadopoulos.

Papadopoulos has pled guilty to lying to the FBI about his contact with people close to the Russian government. He was arrested in July and has since worked with a special counsel led by former FBI Director Robert Mueller. The counsel is looking into relationships Trump and his associates may have had with Russian government officials.
