“Wakanda forever” is right.

Marvel smash Black Panther took home $1.3 billion at the global box office, and the top prize at the Golden Trailer Awards.

The trailer titled “Crown,” won Best of Show on Thursday night at the 19th Annual Golden Trailer Awards at the Ace Hotel in Los Angeles. Since 1999, the GTAs have honored the top of the film trailer crop, from blockbusters to independent films, documentaries and everything in between.

“Crown,” created by Walt Disney Studios’ Create Advertising Group, gave us one of our most detailed looks into Wakanda and the Golden City, and offered up plenty of glimpses of T’Challa’s tech-fuelled Black Panther transformation. Read more…

Trevor Noah made a ‘Black Panther’ cameo that everyone missed

TwitterFacebook

When Black Panther first hit movie theater screens in February, all eyes were on the legendary cast that included Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, and Lupita Nyong’o. But somehow, Trevor Noah managed to sneak into Wakanda too.

The host of the Daily Show had a cameo in the Marvel film that you might have missed completely, no matter how many times you’ve seen the film.

While he wasn’t shown physically, his voice plays an important role leading up to the film’s climax. Towards the end of the film, CIA Agent Everett Ross (Martin Freeman) gets a crash course in flying a vibranium-powered, American-style jet. The A.I. incorporated in the machinery? That’s voiced by Noah, who plays Griot — kind of like what Siri is to an iPhone.  Read more…

Relive T’Challa’s quest as he assumes his duties as King of Wakanda — an isolated and technologically advanced African nation — while he and his loyal subjects become caught up in his late father’s past mistakes, battling enemies to the throne that threaten Wakanda’s way of life and the world at large.

The Blu-ray release includes tons of deleted scenes and gag reels, as well as bonus features such as a look into the actors behind Wakanda’s fighting force — the Dora Milaje — as well as an exploration of Wakanda’s vibranium technology. ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ is officially a billion-dollar movie

TwitterFacebook

Avengers: Infinity War hit yet another box office milestone this weekend.

On Saturday, the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe adventure crossed the billion-dollar mark at the worldwide box office. It took just 11 days to reach that point, faster than any other film to date.

It’s Marvel’s sixth billion-dollar movie and Disney’s seventeenth — meaning the studio’s releases now officially account for half of the 34 movies to ever hit $1 billion at the box office. The weekend also makes Infinity War ($1.16 billion) the #5 super-hero movie of all time at the global box office, behind four other MCU releases. Read more…

‘Black Panther’ director explains what happened to Killmonger’s mother

TwitterFacebook

Black Panther‘s Killmonger is a great villain partially because he’s three-dimensional. His motivations genuinely make sense, and his complicated, tragic backstory makes him a sympathetic character, too.

On the commentary for the Black Panther Blu-Ray, director Ryan Coogler adds another detail to that backstory. We already knew that Killmonger’s mother wasn’t Wakandan — N’Jobu, Killmonger’s father, met her in Oakland — but it wasn’t clear what happened to her.

According to Coogler, when N’Jobu and a young Zuri are conversing at the beginning of the film, just before King T’Chaka arrives, they’re actually trying to find a way to break Killmonger’s mother out of prison. It’s a mission that never came to fruition. Read more…

Deleted ‘Black Panther’ scene has big reveal about Okoye and W’Kabi

TwitterFacebook

If you left Avengers: Infinity War wanting way more of Wakanda and way less of everything else — hard same.

And we’re in luck, because USA Today released an exclusive clip of a deleted Black Panther scene. It’s a reminder of what makes the film stand out in the Marvel franchise, displaying the incredible depth of its characters while also speaking to real-world cultural issues and questions.

Most scintillatingly, it finally confirms what many suspected: Okoye and W’Kabi are married. And marriage is tough, man.

The scene takes place right after T’Challa loses the King’s Challenge to Erik Killmonger, and is thrown off a waterfall — presumably to his death. Read more…

‘Avengers: Infinity War’ is a spotlight on the MCU’s biggest weakness

TwitterFacebook

Warning: This post contains MAJOR spoilers for the end of Avengers: Infinity War

Maybe I’m a monster, but the moment I cheered the loudest during Avengers: Infinity War was when all the superheroes disintegrated and the bad guy got his happy ending.

I’m certainly not a fan of genocide (to put it mildly), or even a Thanos groupie. But I do like compelling stories, and a villain-centric arc that refused to let the heroes win was the first time a Marvel movie has surprised me.

So what’s the problem? Well, the ending leaves me itching for a Thanos prequel instead of the next Avengers or even Captain Marvel — which will undoubtedly undo this unhappy ending. And the knowledge that we’ll probably never get that prequel is why the Marvel Cinematic Universe is starting to lose me. Read more…

Chadwick Boseman helps stop white people from ruining the Wakanda salute

TwitterFacebook

Riddle us this: Why is the idea of a white person loving Black Panther great, while the idea of a white person doing the Wakanda salute sounds not quite right?

Well Saturday Night Live took advantage of having Chadwick Boseman — the king himself — as host to clarify the nuances of loving Black Panther while white: “See the problem is we as black people know that the salute comes from Egyptian kings who were buried right hand over left to clutch the royal scepter.”

Boseman’s character might be right spiritually, but perhaps doesn’t speak for all black people distressed by white fans claiming the salute of a fictional, uncolonized African nation for themselves. Read more…
