‘Rise’ stars reveal the winners of NBC’s theater grant program
In a heartwarming video, NBC and the cast of the new show Rise revealed the recipients of NBC’s R.I.S.E. America Project grant program for high school theater programs around the country.
The video above shows a few of the submission videos from the 50 high schools that received $10,000 each from R.I.S.E. America Project – including Mariposa County High School, which was heavily affected by the California fires that ravaged the state in 2017. The grant program was inspired by NBC’s new drama Rise and falls within National Theatre in Our Schools month.
Auli’i Cravalho (Lilette) and Damon J. Gillespie (Robbie) told the winning high schools that they were selected for the grant, leading to some emotional responses from students and teachers in the theatre programs. Read more…

We can’t help but love it when performers break character on Saturday Night Live, which is exactly what happened when Bill Hader brought back Stefon while hosting on March 17.
He was joined on “Weekend Update” by comedian John Mulaney, who writes Stefon, and who whispered a little something in Hader’s ear to make him break while live.
Mulaney played Stefon’s lawyer, and he whispered in Hader’s ear: “My girlfriend works at Yoshinoya beef bowl.” Yup, that’s what set him off.
To be fair, Hader always breaks while playing Stefon, the nightlife connoisseur who ended Hader’s tenure at the show by running away and marrying Seth Meyers. Hader appeared on Meyers’ show this week to discuss the episode and jokes that made them laugh over the years. Read more…

Go ahead and exhale, This Is Us fans, because we made it – for now. To paraphrase Kevin Pearson, that tense breath we’ve held in throughout a harrowing second season can now be released…but the future is more uncertain than ever.
The Season 2 finale Tuesday night had us all playing the worst case scenario game while flipping out in all manner of ways (this reporter whispered “I’m mad” to no one in particular).
Since early Season 1, the central mystery of This Is Us was how and when Jack Pearson died and exactly what effects his death had on the rest of his family. Most of Season 2 built toward this reveal, to the point where we all but watched a man burn to death after the Super Bowl. Fun! Read more…

NBC’s Rise — a new show about a group of high school students putting on a musical and their trials and tribulations — is about the kids who are stars. The companion web series, however, focuses on an entirely different part of high school theater: The understudies.
The Understudies‘ digital videos will follow students not at the forefront of Stanton High School’s production of Spring Awakening. Though we find out about the group through Michael (Ellie Desautels), we’ve already got a core cast of stage-starved misfits ready to charm.

The first installment of Understudies isn’t super subtle, focusing mainly on one girl who thinks she deserves a lead in the musical because she put in time with the teacher and did tech for a whole year (tech ≠ acting, so not sure where that experience was going). Instead of plotting any ill will against the main leads, the understudies hang out, bond, and play a game of Never Have I Ever. Read more…

Adam Rippon may be done skating at this year’s Winter Olympics, but thankfully that doesn’t mean we’ve seen the last of him.
In addition to winning a bronze medal in the team skating event, the 28-year-old figure skater has made headlines both as one of two openly gay U.S. male athletes competing in Pyeongchang and for speaking up to Vice President Mike Pence in support of LGBTQ rights.
Oh, also for his sass — an element of his personality that will likely be on full display as he spends the rest of the Olympics working as an NBC correspondent.
