Asia Argento, an Italian actress and director at the forefront of the #MeToo movement, reportedly paid off a sexual assault accuser.

The New York Times reports Argento paid $380,000 to 22-year-old actor Jimmy Bennett, after he claimed that he was sexually assaulted by her in a California hotel room.

The claim dates back to when Bennett was only two months past his 17th birthday, while Argento was 37. The age of consent in California is 18.

Both appeared in the 2004 film The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things, where they played mother and son.  Read more…

Taylor Swift makes emotional speech on 1-year anniversary of sexual assault lawsuit win

TwitterFacebook

A year after Taylor Swift’s groping trial, the singer is still speaking out.

In an emotional speech given during her show in Tampa, Florida on Tuesday, Swift sat on a piano bench and reflected on her rollercoaster of a year — which included the 2017 lawsuit she won against radio host David Mueller after he groped her during a meet-and-greet in 2013.

“A year ago I was not playing in a stadium in Tampa. I was in a court room in Denver, Colorado,” she began, “and honestly I was there for a sexual assault case and this day a year ago was the day that the jury sided in my favor and said that they believe in me.”  Read more…

Terry Crews won’t be in ‘Expendables 4’ because a producer tried to silence him on his sexual assault

TwitterFacebook

A popular excuse for not believing survivors of sexual assault is the bizarre misconception that speaking out somehow benefits survivors.

But actor Terry Crews — who has been one of the most vital and fearless voices of the #MeToo movement since the beginning — showed a very real, tangible cost to speaking out Tuesday. He confirmed that his lawsuit against his alleged sexual assaulter was the reason he wouldn’t be in Expendables 4.

During his powerful testimony to a senate committee in support of the Sexual Assault Survivors’ Bill of Rights, Crews spoke candidly about his sexual assault, the culture that enables predators, and the price survivors pay for coming forward. Back in October, Crews filed a lawsuit against WME producer Adam Venit for assaulting him at a party in 2016.  Read more…

Why ‘The Tale’ is the movie everyone is talking about

TwitterFacebook

Jennifer Fox’s The Tale didn’t get the fanfare of a traditional movie premiere, and a quick look at the trailer explains whyThe Tale is the true story of Fox herself coming to terms with her sexual assault as a 13-year-old. It’s heartbreaking, disturbing, and often difficult to watch – all of which makes it essential.

Though it is in many ways the story of what happened, The Tale stands out because it is the story of Fox (portrayed by Laura Dern) realizing what happened, decades later. The director has been emphatic about the fact that this is her story, both to pre-empt critics of its discomfiting nature and to keep these conversations going.  Read more…

One Harvey Weinstein accuser says she won’t celebrate his arrest in a must-read thread

TwitterFacebook

In the days following Harvey Weinstein’s arrest, some within the entertainment industry have posted a statement released by Time’s Up — the organization created in the wake of the scandal.

Others, like actress Annabella Sciorra, have taken things a step further. Sciorra was one of the women to come forward in Ronan Farrow’s follow up stories featured in The New Yorker. On Sunday, she shared that she felt the farthest thing from celebratory when she heard the initial news about his arrest.

“The law finally caught up with Harvey Weinstein on Friday and charge him with multiple counts of rape and sexual assault,” she tweeted. “But nothing about that felt celebratory to me.”  Read more…

’13 Reasons Why’ creator addresses Season 2 rape scene

TwitterFacebook

The following contains spoilers for 13 Reasons Why Season 2.

Those who binged 13 Reasons Why have many reactions to the controversial show’s second season, particularly to one scene in the finale. Series creator Brian Yorkey defends the scene where Tyler (Devin Druid) returns to school after a hiatus, only to be immediately singled out by his bullies and brutally raped in a bathroom stall.

“As intense as that scene is, and as strong as are [sic] or reactions to it may be, it doesn’t even come close to the pain experienced by the people who actually go through these things,” Yorkey told Vulture. “When we talk about something being ‘disgusting’ or hard to watch, often that means we are attaching shame to the experience.”  Read more…

Accused of sexual assault, New York attorney general suing Harvey Weinstein resigns

TwitterFacebook

UPDATED: May 7, 2018, 6:48 p.m. PDT with information about New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman’s resignation.

New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, who recently filed a civil suit against Harvey Weinstein, has himself been accused of physically abusing women.

He announced his resignation just hours after the New Yorker published the accounts of four women, who said Schneiderman assaulted them within the contexts of their romantic relationships and encounters.

“In the last several hours, serious allegations, which I strongly contest, have been made against me,” he said in a statement. “While these allegations are unrelated to my professional conduct or the operations of the office, they will effectively prevent me from leading the office’s work at this critical time. I therefore resign my office, effective at the close of business on May 8, 2018.” Read more…
