Tumblr iOS app removed over child pornography, users complain unrelated blogs are being purged

TwitterFacebook

Chaos at Tumblr.

After users reported the Tumblr iOS app disappeared from Apple’s App Store over the weekend, the microblogging platform initially stated nothing more than they were “working to resolve the issue.” Days later, with the iPhone app still MIA, Tumblr has published a longer statement identifying the issue: child pornography on the platform.

In a statement on the announcement page of its help center, Tumblr writes:

“We’re committed to helping build a safe online environment for all users, and we have a zero tolerance policy when it comes to media featuring child sexual exploitation and abuse. As this is an industry-wide problem, we work collaboratively with our industry peers and partners like NCMEC (National Center for Missing & Exploited Children) to actively monitor content uploaded to the platform. Every image uploaded to Tumblr is scanned against an industry database of known child sexual abuse material, and images that are detected never reach the platform. A routine audit discovered content on our platform that had not yet been included in the industry database. Read more…

Tumblr accounts used for state-sponsored propaganda had perfectly dumb names

TwitterFacebook

You’re a smart cookie, and would never typically fall for state-sponsored disinformation online. However, and just bear with me here, what if it came from a Tumblr account with a really great name?

And by great, we of course mean so perfectly stupid that it defies belief.

Tumblr today published a list of users it claims “were engaged in state-sponsored disinformation and propaganda campaigns,” and the wonderful collection represents a funhouse mirror look at internet culture as interpreted by possible Russian trolls. Specifically, Tumblr tied some of the accounts in question to the Internet Research Agency — a Russian troll farm known for its efforts to influence the 2016 U.S. presidential election. Read more…

Russian trolls used Reddit and Tumblr, too

TwitterFacebook

Facebook, Twitter, and Google aren’t the only companies to face questions from lawmakers about the role their platforms played in spreading disinformation during the presidential election.

Reddit and Tumblr are now being dragged into the Senate Intelligence Committee’s investigation, according to The Washington Post. The news comes just days after The Daily Beast found evidence the Internet Research Agency — the Russia-backed “troll farm” that weaponized social media to great effect during the election — also had a sizable presence on Reddit and Tumblr.
