History made with first LGBT kiss at Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

TwitterFacebook

The coldest Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on record had the most heartwarming of moments.

In a historic first at the world-famous Thanksgiving parade in New York City, the two lead actresses of the new Broadway musical “The Prom” kissed. The smooch between Caitlin Kinnunen and Isabelle McCalla was nationally broadcast and occurred during the Broadway show’s musical number in the 92nd annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

“The Prom” debuted on Broadway in October and is currently running at the Longacre Theatre in New York. The show is a story about two teenagers, Emma and her girlfriend Alyssa — played by Kinnunen and McCalla, respectively — living in small-town Indiana. The two high school students want to go to their prom together, but the school’s parent-teacher association cancels the dance altogether once they find out. Read more…

GLAAD reports a record-shattering year for LGBTQ people on TV

TwitterFacebook

Between the transgender military ban and an HHS memo seeking to define “transgender out of existence,” it’s been a painful, difficult year for the LGBTQ community.

There are nonetheless brighter signs — and in a medium everyone loves to hate — television.

A new GLAAD report analyzing LGBTQ representation in television finds a “record high percentage of LGBTQ characters on broadcast TV” in 2018. Before Trump was elected, this is what we used to call “good news.”

GLAAD measures LGBTQ representation across broadcast, streaming, and cable television. According to the report, a record high 8.8 percent of all regularly occurring characters on broadcast television in 2018 are LGBTQ series regulars. In 2017, that number stood at 6.4 percent, then a record high.  Read more…

Cate Blanchett defends straight actors playing LGBTQ roles

TwitterFacebook

Hollywood has a long history of straight actors playing LGBTQ roles, and it’s something Cate Blanchett has defended.

The Australian actress played a lesbian woman in 2015 film Carol, and according to the Hollywood Reporter, she had never been asked about her sexuality until she played an LGBTQ character.

Blanchett disagrees with the notion that an actor should have lived the experience of the character they play, saying that it defies the whole point of acting.

“It also speaks to something that I’m quite passionate about in storytelling generally, but in film specifically, is that film can be quite a literal medium,” she said at the Rome Film Festival. Read more…

Gender-fluid clothing is revolutionary – if only it were more affordable.

TwitterFacebook

A shopping trip to a mainstream clothing store is usually a fun and relaxing way to spend a day out. But for people like Tatyana Bellamy-Walker, who is gender fluid, a “normal” shopping spree can turn into a total nightmare.

“Sometimes it feels like you’re put in a dangerous position,” Walker said. “It feels like everyone is judging you if you’re in a section you don’t look like you’re supposed to be in.”

Thankfully, shopping opportunities for non-binary people — or really anyone with a genderqueer presentation — have grown over the years. If only more people could afford it.

‘Sesame Street’ writer thinks of Bert and Ernie as a ‘loving couple’

TwitterFacebook

The queer fan community have long known that Bert and Ernie were gay Muppets. It’s just taken a little bit longer for the rest of the world to catch up.

In an interview with Queerty, one of Sesame Street‘s original writers, Mark Saltzman, finally confirmed the rumors. According to Saltzman, Bert and Ernie aren’t just gay. He thinks of them as a “loving couple.”

“I remember one time that a column from The San Francisco Chronicle, a preschooler in the city turned to mom and asked ‘are Bert & Ernie lovers?'” Saltzman told Queerty. “And that got passed around, and everyone had their chuckle and went back to it. And I always felt that without a huge agenda, when I was writing Bert & Ernie, they were. I didn’t have any other way to contextualize them. The other thing was, more than one person referred to Arnie [Saltzman’s partner at the time] & I as “Bert & Ernie.” Read more…
