‘Captain Marvel’ feels at once fresh and familiar

TwitterFacebook

Captain Marvel unambiguously represents a fresh new face for the Marvel Cinematic Universe — she is, as you’ve surely heard by now, the franchise’s first solo female movie lead.

Yet Captain Marvel, the movie surrounding her, feels, for better or for worse, like so much of what has come before it.

The tone strikes that familiar mix of earnest heroism and relatable humor. The action sequences rely less on clever choreography and camerawork than on shiny CG and emotional resonance. Much of the plot hinges on twists we’ve seen in other Marvel movies.

And despite the intergalactic premise and period setting — Captain Marvel a.k.a. Carol Danvers, played by Brie Larson, starts out as an alien soldier in the 1990s — the sets largely resemble that nondescript airplane hangar from Captain America: Civil WarRead more…

‘Captain Marvel’ goes higher, further, faster in its world premiere

TwitterFacebook

It’s not every day an extraterrestrial super-soldier touches down on our planet – so when one does, it seems only appropriate to give her a proper Terran welcome.

Captain Marvel had its premiere in Hollywood Monday evening, closing down Hollywood Blvd. from Orange to Highland. Inside the white tents, all was crimson red, royal blue, and yellow gold – Carol Danvers’ signature colors.

There was all the usual excitement we’ve come to expect from splashy Disney premieres, including glammed-up stars, eager fans, and photo-opp-friendly props. Just look at that sweet jet behind star Lashana Lynch below: Read more…

Trevor Noah’s inspirational quote at the Oscars was actually superb trolling

TwitterFacebook

Trevor Noah used his stage time at the Oscars to honor his South African roots – and to poke a little healthy fun at white people while he was at it.

The Daily Show host shared a Xhosa proverb while introducing Best Picture nominee Black Panther. Except that it wasn’t an inspirational quote, but Noah saying, “White people don’t know I’m lying.”

“Growing up as a young boy in Wakanda, I would see King T’Challa flying over our village,” Noah joked. “And he would remind me of a great Xhosa phrase.”

It turns out the next part was also a joke; Noah spoke in Xhosa and then translated his words to “In times like these, we are stronger when we fight together than when we try to fight apart.” Read more…

From Gaga to ‘Green Book’: The best and worst Oscar moments of the night

TwitterFacebook

Even without a host, the 2019 Oscars managed to be simultaneously entertaining, infuriating, insipid, and bizarre. For the most part, the good seemed to outweigh the bad, but the bad was divisive and confusing.

We can explain.

BEST: Maya Rudolph, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler

This powerhouse trio of SNL alumni were the first presenters to take the stage, emphasizing that they were not hosts (and making us wish they were). They delighted in puns about the nominated movies, including such gems as “Hey Chadwick Boseman, Wakanda plans you got later?” Rudolph even took a crack at Lady Gaga’s iconic “Shallow” riff right in front of the star, and may we just say – she nailed it! Hostless Oscars kick off with a performance by Queen

TwitterFacebook

It’s a strange year for our friend Oscar, marooned without a host, and instead of opting for a replacement, the telecast kicked off in a whole new manner.

The Oscars opened with a performance by Queen (with Adam Lambert, who has toured with the band for years), whose songs and story defined Best Picture nominee Bohemian Rhapsody.

The audience of A-listers sang along enthusiastically, because even a room full of people who probably voted for vastly different Oscar movies can all stan Queen.

Okay one second in and the oscars are already lit.
