Nike’s ‘Dream Crazier’ ad is an empowering visual love letter to women

TwitterFacebook

“If we show emotion we’re called dramatic. If we want to play against men, we’re nuts. And if we dream of equal opportunity, delusional,” the voiceover in Nike’s new ad, titled “Dream Crazier,” begins.

The empowering video — which debuted during Sunday night’s Oscars and is voiced by Serena Williams — goes on to call out a slew of gender-based double standards and phrases used to put down women who strive to achieve greatness.

“When we stand for something, we’re unhinged. When we’re too good there’s something wrong with us. And if we get angry, we’re hysterical, irrational, or just being crazy,” Williams continues, while footage of some of the world’s greatest athletes — all of whom happen to be women — plays in the background. NHL reporter comes within inches of a puck nailing him in the head

TwitterFacebook

Phrases like “close call” and “near miss” are often overused — but in this case they almost feel like an understatement.

On Monday night, the Columbus Blue Jackets took on Tampa Bay Lightning in the NHL.

Commentating on the game was Pierre McGuire, who at one point came within roughly two inches of a rogue puck shearing off his glasses.

Yikes.

Also, kudos to the person behind the camera for their unflinching dedication to the job.

NBA dunk contest winner leaps up and over Shaq to claim 1st place

TwitterFacebook

To the awe even the NBA’s elite All-Stars, guard Hamidou Diallo leaped over 7-foot-1-inch Shaquille O’Neal to win the 2019 dunk contest.

For emphasis, the Oklahoma City Thunder rookie then hung from the rim by his elbow joint before revealing a Superman shirt hidden beneath his jersey.

Shaq, who once dominated the NBA will his 7’1″, 325-pound frame, had his head slightly bowed, but Diallo still made his point and cleared the Hall of Famer’s head with some room to spare.

Colin Kaepernick settles collusion case with NFL

TwitterFacebook

Colin Kaepernick and his former teammate, Eric Reid, have reached a settlement in their suit against the NFL.

The players sued the league in 2017, alleging it colluded to keep the players out of league in response to their protests — against police brutality and racial injustice — during the pre-game National Anthem, which drew the ire of President Donald Trump.

Details of the settlement were not disclosed. In fact, it seems like we’re destined to know very little about the terms of the deal, unless they leak out at some point. The NFL issued a brief, three sentence joint statement on the matter. Read more…

Super Bowl LIII set streaming records, while TV viewership saw massive drop

Football fans didn’t tune into this year’s Super Bowl coverage on TV in as large numbers as in years past. According to Nielsen, the big game drew an average televised audience of around 98.2 million viewers. CBS, however, said the big game was watched across all platforms – including digital and streaming – by a […]

The best thing about the halftime show was everyone making fun of Maroon 5

TwitterFacebook

There is no band more consistently, doggedly embarrassing in America than Maroon 5.

Their halftime performance at Super Bowl LIII was no exception. Viewers were subjected to Adam Levine’s exposed, erect nipples and guitar solos fit for a middle school battle of the bands.

Nobody captured this cultural collapse better than Twitter.

I’m sorry, but you just can’t have Adam Levine hopping to a hip-hop beat like he’s at a ska show — then crooning with an *actually* talented gospel choir  — and not expect people to mock it. It’s part of our cultural algorithm. Read more…

Marshawn Lynch’s big mood stole the Super Bowl pregame show

TwitterFacebook

Super Bowl LII isn’t even over and we already have an MVP.

Ahead of the kickoff on Sunday night, Oakland Raiders running back Marshawn Lynch stole the show during the presentation of the Walter Payton Man of the Year award.

As the camera panned across the players gathered on the field for the presentation, it caught Lynch — decked out in a branded sweatsuit from his apparel line — sitting down, while everyone else around him was standing

He was also seen trying to avoid the camera during a speech by another player, J.J. Watt, by hiding behind Watt’s head. Read more…

Usain Bolt tied the NFL’s fastest 40-yard dash and he was super chill about it

TwitterFacebook

Usain Bolt really just did that.

The retired Olympian tied the NFL’s record for the fastest 40-yard dash, clocking in at 4.22 seconds, and he wasn’t even wearing specialized running spikes. He did it in literal sweatpants and casual sneakers.

People were not surprised at all that the nine time gold medalist is … fast.

Crazy stuff… the fastest guy in the world is the fastest guy in the world.
