John McEnroe earns 10 times more than Martina Navratilova for Wimbledon commentating

TwitterFacebook

Tennis star Martina Navratilova has claimed she gets paid a mere tenth of John McEnroe’s salary for her work as a commentator at Wimbledon.

Speaking on BBC Panorama, the Czech tennis champion—who’s considered among the best female tennis players of all time— revealed that she gets paid about £15K ($21K) for her role as a Wimbledon commentator, while John McEnroe earns £150K ($209K) for the same work.

Navratilova said it was “a shock” to discover the difference in earnings. “Unless John McEnroe’s doing a whole bunch of stuff outside Wimbledon, he’s getting at least ten times as much money than I am for very comparable work,” Navratilova said.  Read more…

6 things you can do on International Women’s Day to fight for gender equality in 2018

TwitterFacebook

International Women’s Day (IWD) is an annual call to action designed to leave you feeling empowered and inspired. The celebratory day acknowledges the achievements of girls and women around the world and challenges people to join the global fight for gender equality.

But even as you’re cheering the idea of IWD, you might not know how to personally make a difference.

We asked three experts — Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, executive director of U.N. Women; Gayle E. Smith, president and CEO of ONE; and Sylvia Acevedo, CEO of the Girl Scouts of the USA — for their suggestions on how to participate in IWD, and how to continue advocating for equality year-round.  Read more…

The investment inequality that’s just as important as the gender wage gap

TwitterFacebook

The gender pay gap — or the statistic that women make approximately 80 cents for every dollar that men make — is a well-documented phenomenon, backed up by data from the U.S. Census Bureau and the American Association of Women

Arguably as pressing an issue is the gender investment gap: Many women are less prepared for long-term financial health than their male counterparts.

Women have the potential to add $12 trillion to the global economy over the course of the next decade, so helping them use their assets advantageously is a win-win for all. Below, we take a deeper look at the gender investment gap and how to begin to close it. Read more…

Why this bookstore is only stocking titles written by female authors

TwitterFacebook

Nestled between kaleidoscopic graffitied walls on a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it side street in east London lies a bookstore with a difference.

The shop, which is called Like A Woman, only stocks books written by women. Books penned by persistent women who’ve rebelled, shouted, and “fought for change.”

This tiny bookstore—the creation of publishing house Penguin Books— is a temporary fixture in the run-up to International Women’s Day on 8 March. But, though its presence may be fleeting, the creators hope to make an indelible point about the representation of women in publishing.  Read more…

#TheDifferenceSheMakes: Celebrate the women who inspire you in this vertical video contest

TwitterFacebook

All around the world, incredible and ordinary women are sparking positive change within their communities and homes. Their achievements range from small and everyday — one woman making an impact upon a classroom or neighbourhood, for example — to the extraordinary, such as innovators who are leading movements, building businesses, or volunteering their time to make our planet a better place.

To tell these inspiring stories on an international stage, Nespresso Talents, a storytelling contest, is inviting aspiring filmmakers to create videos that celebrate women and their achievements, both big and small. The contest, now in its third year, aims to highlight talent and artistry through vertical video, a format fit for the best viewing experience in a mobile-first world, whilst supporting and nurturing young talent in film. This year’s contest also happens to align with International Women’s Day, coming up on March 8, which is an ideal moment to highlight these empowering stories. Read more…

Why the UK has set up a separate fund to further the Time’s Up movement

TwitterFacebook

Time’s Up. These two words have reverberated across the globe since over 300 women in Hollywood joined forces to form a movement to combat systemic sexual harassment across all workplaces.

The initiative— launched by the biggest names in the U.S. entertainment industry—has raised $21 million for its legal defence fund in the past month alone.

Across the Atlantic ocean, British actors, directors, and producers have followed in the footsteps of their U.S. counterparts by setting up a UK fund to “end a culture where harassment and abuse are commonplace.” While inspired by their U.S. sisters, this UK chapter of Time’s Up will not be a mirror image of the legal defence fund.  Read more…

Why do women invest less than men?

TwitterFacebook

Gender equality is the topic du jour — from the gender wage gap to gender bias in the workplace, people are discussing the issues like never before, and it’s about time. But one iteration of gender equality hasn’t received the attention it deserves, and truly needs — the gender gap in investing.

In a study by Moneyfarm, over half of women without financial investments in Britain cite a lack of funds as the most common barrier to investing. And almost 25 per cent say they do not have any disposable income in a typical month – versus just 14 per cent of men.

Women’s aversion to investing is well documented, but little progress has been made in the way of a solution. Due to different career trajectories and predicted longer lifespans, among other factors, women need to be investing for their futures now.   Read more…

Woman gets email rejecting her for a job because she’s not a man

TwitterFacebook

Finding out you didn’t meet the requirements for a job you wanted is always tough to hear.

But, a company in Spain is facing an almighty backlash after it sent a candidate an email telling her she didn’t get hired because she isn’t a man.

Carla Forcada, who lives in Barcelona, Spain, applied for the role of account executive at PR agency Impulsa Comunicación. After sending her CV, she received an email from the PR firm telling her that they were looking for a man because the role would require work with Coca-Cola and Carglass accounts. She tweeted a screenshot of the email she received, which is written in Spanish, alongside the comment: “Unbelievable to think that some companies still don’t support gender equality in the workplace.”  Read more…
