‘DOS,’ the sequel to ‘UNO,’ is a new take on an old favorite

TwitterFacebook

There’s a sequel to the card game UNO — it’s appropriately called DOS.

DOS is a new take on UNO that uses a similar system of numbered and colored cards, but this time around players have two card piles to choose from for playing cards and win after earning enough points, not by putting down all of their cards. Of course, you’re also supposed to call out “DOS” if you have two cards in your hand.

UNO first came out in 1971 and has remained mostly untouched, but its premise of matching numbers and colors and screwing over your opponents was ready for a new iteration.  Read more…

New ‘Game of Thrones’ info hints at the bleak fate of King’s Landing

Ah: the map room. Watching Cersei arrogantly tramping over the seven kingdoms of Westeros in the Red Keep’s courtyard was perhaps the most apt metaphor for her rise to power.
We left Cersei in Season 7 with her armies in shambles, the imminent threat…

We know how many episodes will be in ‘Stranger Things 3’

TwitterFacebook

Stranger Things 3 is on its way, and now we know exactly how many episodes we’re waiting on. Netflix confirmed that Season 3 will have eight episodes as the shadow monster (most likely) zeroes in on Hawkins.

The news was first reported by TVLine

Stranger Things 2 premiered at the end of Oct. 2017, a little over a year after Season 1’s August 2016 debut. While Season 3 doesn’t yet have a premiere date – fingers crossed it’s before the end of the year and they don’t pull a Game of Thrones – having an episode count does help us manage expectations of how much story we’ll get and when.   Read more…

Star Wars’ obsession with white guy filmmakers is hurting the franchise

TwitterFacebook

For the most part, Lucasfilm’s keeping their Star Wars plans close to the vest.

But of the details we do know about their upcoming slate, one obvious pattern stands out: All of them are being created by white men.

This isn’t a new state of affairs. As Maureen Ryan points out at Variety, 24 people have been brought on to “direct, write, or otherwise take the creative lead” on a Star Wars movie over the past 41 years.

Of those 24, just one (Leigh Brackett, a screenwriter on Empire Strikes Back) has been a white woman. The other 23 have been white men – up to and including the latest additions, Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. Zero have been people of color. Read more…

My favorite thing about ‘Fifty Shades Freed’ is how terrible everyone is at their job

TwitterFacebook

Warning: Spoilers follow for Fifty Shades Freed.

If there’s one thing you should take away from Fifty Shades Freed, it’s this: No matter how bad you are at your job, you’re still not as bad as literally every single character in this movie.

Fifty Shades is a veritable orgy of ineptitude and unprofessionalism – which might not be a problem, except that the film also insists on showing everyone at work all the time.

Multiple scenes are devoted to Ana explaining that it’s extremely important for her to work; Christian is routinely praised for his brilliant business instincts. Plus, since they’re the kind of couple who barely has any outside friends, most of the people surrounding them are people also at work – employees, colleagues, public servants.  Read more…

‘Black Panther’ builds a world you’ll want to return to again and again

TwitterFacebook

At the end of the day, Black Panther is just another movie.

But it sure doesn’t feel that way when you’re watching it.

Black Panther perfects what the Marvel Cinematic Universe has always done so well: build a world so richly rendered, it’s almost a letdown to reach the end of the film and realize it’s time to return to our own reality.

In this case, the world is the fictional African nation of Wakanda – the most technologically advanced country on Earth, which got that way by jealously guarding its wealth and knowledge from everyone else. The result is a land untouched by the horrors of European conquest and blessed by the bounty of the land (specifically, by a rare and valuable naturally occurring metal known as vibranium).  Read more…

‘Deadpool 2’ poster hilariously channels… ‘Flashdance’?!

TwitterFacebook

Take your passion. And make it happen. Ryan Reynolds knows his movie history.

Reynolds reference to Flashdance in Deadpool 2‘s latest poster could just be a cute visual riff. Orrrrr… it could be a nod to the unexpected success of Flashdance, a critically reviled 1983 film that turned into a box office smash, and the third-highest grossing release of that year.

Sort of like a little R-rated superhero production called Deadpool, released in early 2016 — a time of year when movies are usually sent to die. The first Deadpool finished the year in the #6 spot in the box office, earning more than $783 million worldwide. Read more…

All the details you missed in the ‘Westworld’ Season 2 Super Bowl trailer

TwitterFacebook

Amidst the glitz, the glam, the sporting, the ads, the Solos, and the Timberlake, one spectacle stood out more than any other at the Super Bowl: Westworld’s Season 2 trailer.

Playing out to a classical rendition of Kanye West’s ‘Runaway,’ the 2-minute trailer presented a dearth of motifs and hidden messages that can help us predict what’s to become of a Westworld ruled by the Hosts.

So here are the most important reveals and secrets from the Westworld Season 2 trailer.

1. An encrypted message leads to Delos corporate website

Crafty redditor Askin1 deciphered a binary code briefly displayed in the trailer to find www.delosdestinations.com. This isn’t the first Delos website to come out of Westworld — and that older one seems to have new mysteries to uncover (try pressing shift or talking to Aeden, for example). Read more…
