LGBTI activists are reclaiming Rwanda, one neighborhood at a time
Mailly walks into every room like she’s auditioning for Next Top Model, even when it’s just her own kitchen.
She passes by the oven like she’s stepping onto the runway. Applies her make-up like she’s about to step onto a TV set for the last damn interview of the week
Mailly wants a bigger, more glamorous world than the one she’s been given. But as a trans woman in Kigali, Rwanda’s capital, her stage is limited: kitchen, bedroom, the occasional bar. She can’t go to work because she can’t apply for employment without producing identification and revealing the sex she was assigned at birth. She can’t escape to America, even for a brief trip, because the country doesn’t readily grant visas to Rwandans like her, and likely won’t for a long time. Read more…

Trans woman beats ‘chief homophobe’ in historic Virginia race
History was made in Virginia on Tuesday when a 33-year-old woman became the state’s first openly transgender elected official.
And to top off the momentous win, Democrat Danica Roem unseated a Republican incumbent who calls himself the state’s “chief homophobe.”
Roem, a journalist and metal-loving mom, beat out 26-year incumbent Robert G. Marshall, 73, for the House of Delegates seat that represents Prince William County.
The win had LGBTQ advocates — and Democrats seeking to turn the tide against Trumpian-style candidates — cheering. Read more…

Spoiler warning: This post contains plot details for Stranger Things 2.
Stranger Things is built on mysteries, but there’s no character quite as inexplicable or poorly defined as Billy Hargrove, the aggressive bad boy who spends most of Season 2 terrorizing Max, Lucas, and Steve, for reasons that are never fully explained beyond him being a walking villainous cliché.
Billy’s antagonism towards Max and Lucas is fairly easy to interpret: Max is his stepsister, and he’s clearly resentful about being forced to babysit her. Lucas is black, and Billy’s dad is an abusive, bigoted prick, so it wouldn’t be hard to imagine that his backwards ideas have rubbed off on his son — although the show is oddly squeamish about overtly addressing it as racism, which is especially weird considering that the writers are not squeamish about having a musclebound 17-year-old trying to beat the crap out of a nerdy 13-year-old.
